Daniel 4:18-22 This dream I king Nebuchadnezzar have seen. Now thou, O Belteshazzar, declare the interpretation thereof, forasmuch as all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known unto me the interpretation: but thou art able; for the spirit of the holy gods is in thee. 19 Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was astonied for one hour, and his thoughts troubled him. The king spake, and said, Belteshazzar, let not the dream, or the interpretation thereof, trouble thee. Belteshazzar answered and said, My lord, the dream be to them that hate thee, and the interpretation thereof to thine enemies. 20 The tree that thou sawest, which grew, and was strong, whose height reached unto the heaven, and the sight thereof to all the earth; 21 Whose leaves were fair, and the fruit thereof much, and in it was meat for all; under which the beasts of the field dwelt, and upon whose branches the fowls of the heaven had their habitation: 22 It is thou, O king, that art grown and become strong: for thy greatness is grown, and reacheth unto heaven, and thy dominion to the end of the earth.
Nebuchadnezzar recognized the uniqueness of Daniel among all the wise men of his kingdom. He saw in him something special that was not of this world but had to come from the spirit world. To not only interpret dreams but to also be able to declare what another person had dreamed was beyond comprehension outside of the knowledge that there was a spirit world and that those spirits in that world could speak through man and even live in men. This is a concept that the educated world (most scientists and all evolutionists to be specific) discounts but the "unlearned and ignorant" (Acts 4:13) have no trouble believing. Children of God have no trouble believing in the spirit world having been made a part of it. (John 14:17) There are many grannies and gramps in the backwoods and hills of Tennessee that might not have an education but have graduated from "faith college" and know about the spirits, both good and bad. They also know firsthand the Holy Spirit of God who indwells them. People who practice voodoo and black arts may not be educated in schools but they all know of the existence and power of spirits of the dark world. Many who have been deep into drugs, especially mind altering drugs such as LSD have had first hand experience with these dark world demons.
Nebuchadnezzar ascribed the power of Daniel as coming from "the holy gods".(vs. 18) and as such realized that there was a power behind Daniel that was not of his own. It was through this knowledge that the king was able to say "thou art able".
Daniel must have taken on an air of deep meditation as he grows completely silent as if a trance and the frown that comes on his face was the only hint of the trouble that was coming Nebuchadnezzar's way. Finally Nebuchadnezzar could stand it no more and told Daniel to not be bothered by what he saw but to tell him the interpretation whether it be good or bad. At this Daniel tells the king that the dream is going to be pleasing to his enemies and those that hated him. Given the iron fisted rule of Nebuchadnezzar there must have been plenty. Think on Saddam Hussein.
Daniel proceeds and tells the king the tree he saw in his dream was "thou, O king". Just as a majestic tree shoots up to the heaven in height and spreads is limbs outward to cover the land Nebuchadnezzar had grown in power and majesty. As the mighty tree can be seen from afar so could the effects of Nebuchadnezzar's rule be seen far and wide. As the tree offers shelter and food Nebuchadnezzar had taken care of his subjects.
In his dream Nebuchadnezzar had seen this mighty tree cut down and bands of iron and brass placed around it. He had seen the birds and animals scattered and now Daniel is telling him the tree represents him. The blow must have come hard to the king. It is probably easy for Nebuchadnezzar to grasp that he is the tree and is going to fall but what of the rest of the dream? What of the decree from the holy ones and the proclamation that he was to put out in the fields and have the heart of a beast? What of the length of time mentioned? All these questions must have crowded into his mind as Daniel was speaking.
The answers would come soon enough but they would not be to his liking.
