Subject: When Fears Come

John 6:20 But he saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid.

Fear is something that everyone has to contend with. There is not a person that does not fear in one way or the other. Some are real and some imagined but even imaginary fears, though engendered in the mind and should be baseless are real to the ones who are plagued by them.

My oldest daughter as a child had a great fear of what was under her bed. She would not get off the bed in normal fashion but would stand on the edge and jump as far as she could so that her feet would not touch close the the bed. Now we smile at those things but the possibility of monsters under the bed were real to her.

In like fashion many of our fears are based on what might be. We watch, read or listen to news reports and develop a fear of what might be. In doing so we often show a lack of faith in the One who has assured us He will never leave us nor forsake us. We forget His words: "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." (John 14:27) David, who had great reason to fear many times in his life said "What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee." (Psalms 56:3) He knew to whom to give his fears and he did.

Fears are going to come to us. We will never be free from fear and anxiety in this life but we should know in whom we can trust our situations and doubts to.

The disciples were alone on the sea and in a storm. The waves were rough as the wind blew hard and it was dark. They were apprehensive of what might be, having forgotten that it was Jesus who had told them to cross the sea of Galilee that very night. Jesus, knowing the storm and knowing their fear came walking to them on the water and then their fear was greatly heightened as they saw the figure of Jesus walking across the tops of the waves. Their imaginations ran wild as they assumed they were seeing a ghost. "It is I; be not afraid."

Gone was the fear and gladness replaced it. In the account in Matthew we find Peter getting bold and asking the Lord to bid him come to Him on the water. The Lord said "Come" and indeed Peter did go to Jesus on the water. He was able to walk on the water as long as he kept his eyes on the Master. When his attention was drawn to the breaking waves and the high wind his mind and thoughts left the master and fear returned. Matthew 14:30-31 But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. 31 And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?

Are we not like Peter? Do we not doubt that Jesus can control all our situations and take away all our doubts and fears? If we can but keep our hearts focused on Jesus we should have no fear. Doubt should vanish away. Even when real danger presents itself to us as David faced so many times we can have peace in the storm.

Let the words of Isaiah speak as he presented what the Lord had given to him to pass on to Israel. "But now thus saith the LORD that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine. 2 When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee. 3 For I am the LORD thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Saviour: --" ( Isaiah 43:1-3) Will He do any less for His children in this age?

Such a simple command from Jesus, but so hard to hold onto. I will try to say this verse every day until it is ingrained in my being, not my mind.

Jesus is bigger than all our problems and or fears.

Nothing to big for God to handle. When fears come all we need to do is give them to Him.

"Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for Thou art with me--".

It's the everyday things I forget to take to him. I'm working on it, though. 8-)))
