Subject: 1 John 5:1-5

1 John 5:1-5 Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him. 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous. 4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. 5 Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?

Found in the passage above are some statements of fact that we all should get a grasp of. The first statement of fact is in verse 1. "Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God". The only caveat we should place here is that the belief is a heart knowledge and not just a head acknowledgment. The devils know but they fear and tremble. (see Mark 5:7 and James 2:19) This belief we must have is equated with faith. If we have faith that Jesus is the Christ then we are children of God. We are His spiritual offspring. Nothing can change that.

2. "Every one that loveth Him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him." Who is "Him that begat"? God! We are begotten by God. The statement then is that if we are begotten by God then we love all the others who have been also begotten. This statement does not take into consideration that you may not at all times feel love toward your brother. We should never forget there is an inner man and an outward man. When we manifest God we manifest love. When we manifest the nature of the flesh we are not allowing God to "shine" through with His love. The love is there but we keep it bottled up sometimes.

3. Found in verse 2 is the test as to whether we have that love. "For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments". Here is a seeming "catch 22". The "commandments" mentioned are not the 10 commandments. They are the commandments as found in the New Testament. The first commandment is to love God with our whole being. Mark 12:30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. The second commandment is Mark 12:31 And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these. All other commandments are bound up in these two. (Matt. 22:40) This should lead us to a profound truth. We should be concentrating on these two commandments and not on worrying about keeping all the rest. If we can master these two we have succeeded in keeping God's commandments. Actually we only need to master the 1st and the 2nd will come automatically.

4. The fourth statement of fact that we should grasp is found in verse 4. "Whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world". This is plain stated fact. If you are born of God you HAVE overcome the world through Jesus Christ who is in every Christian. John 16:33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

5. As overcomers we are victorious. "This is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith." As believers we are born of God and as children of God we are commandment keepers and as children of God we are victors over the world through God. Not of self but only through God in that we have faith in Him and not self. God will see us through, even to and through death.

We see then there are certain things that come automatically with our salvation. These are all attributes of God which have been imparted to us. These attributes are not imparted based on whether we feel we have them but they are solely based on what God has done with and for us at the moment of salvation. If we are not rejoicing in these facets of salvation we have no one to blame but ourselves.

All the books by John have many facets. One could spend a lifetime preaching or teaching on these many treasures tucked away in the words God gave him to write.

I really enjoyed this study, HB. Very well stated truths. 8-)

Speaking of studies.... how are the twins doing?I'll bet you're all having the time of your life--you getting to spend more time with them, and they getting to enjoy learning in a great environment. Sounds like a win win situation. 8-)))

The biggest advantage for the twins is one on one teaching. This has helped immensely. They are doing well in spelling with almost straight 100s for both. They have greatly approved in math with their grades averaging in the low 90s. They are also getting much practice in cursive writing which is getting less and less attention in the schools. The biggest problem we have faced so far is keeping the girls focused. It has improved but it still has a way to go before we are satisfied. When the girls are focused and not tired they excel. When they have not had to sleep they need we groan a little. We are working on their mom and dad in that area.

The public school system is a failure as far as I am concerned and this is because of the control from the Feds and state government with little control at the local level.

The girls can have their education in a relaxed atmosphere here at home and it is impossible for that to take place in a crowded school room. The teachers can give scant time to personal teaching and therefore load the kids with homework with the idea their parents will take up the slack. In many homes this does not happen.

Also in public school the teaching of evolution and the removal of all aspects of Christianity is prevalent. It is getting even more so with the forbidding of prayer and removal of Christ from books and teaching. Political correctness is also a great problem in the schools as is the major push toward liberalism at all levels of school.

Dale and I have decided to dedicate a major part of our lives for the next 9 years to seeing the girls will get the education they need. Our day starts with prayer and Bible reading. If God will bless us with health and patience we will finish this that we have started.

We realize that our age will be a great factor as well as Dale's health but we are putting our trust in our Saviour to see us through. We are not trusting the "arm of flesh" (2 Chron. 32:8) but in Philippians 4:13 "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me."

How's that grandbaby of yours doing?

I agree with you wholeheartedly about the school systems and cringe to think of what they'll be teaching my little Ada, but I have to trust that God will help her parents teach her their values and those will prevail, despite the brainwashing they'll get in school. I will make that a daily prayer.
I know you'll be able to keep this going for the girls because this joint goal will strengthen you all.
I will keep you and Dale in my daily prayers that you will continue to have strength and patience with this huge task. I know you will put it in God's hands and by that you will succeed. I have faith in that. 8-)
Ada is growing and changing daily. I don't need to tell you how much I love her--don't need to, because you know the deep love a grandparent feels for the children of their children. I am fortunate that my daughter makes sure her dad and I, as well as Chip and Kathy, each has time with Ada on the video camera every week, and that helps so much. The look she gets on her face when the cam comes on and she sees us, just lifts our hearts with joy. I'll send you some pictures tonight or tomorrow, before I leave to go to Terre Haute for a long weekend. THEN I'll stay home for awhile... grin
