LUMP OF CLAY

Jeremiah 18:4 And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.

Many deep truths are revealed in allegory. Here we are drawn in our minds to the picture of a potter working on the potter's wheel making a vessel As the clay is shaped on the wheel many times a flaw or imperfection will show up in the vessel that is being made. When this happens the potter will remove the flaw which afterwards requires pressing the clay back into a lump and starting over again with the aim of creating a perfect vessel.

When looking at the above verse what it does not say is that the potter messed up. No it was marred but it does not say that the potter caused the imperfection. Nevertheless when the imperfection showed up it was impossible for the potter to accept the flawed vessel as it would have turned out.

Psalm 40:2 He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.

God pulled Adam up from the dust of the earth, added water and then formed man from the resultant clay. The vessel looked good but imperfection showed up in the vessel which God as the master potter could not tolerate. What was He to do with a vessel that had an outward appearance that looked good but had a terrible flaw within the vessel? Job 10:9 Remember, I beseech thee, that thou hast made me as the clay; and wilt thou bring me into dust again? Yes He most certainly will. Job 34:15 All flesh shall perish together, and man shall turn again unto dust.

God said I will return it to the dust and then make it over. John 3:7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
Ah, yes! Reborn! The first birth is marred and God must make the vessel over so that it will be perfect and acceptable in His sight.

Unlike the clay on the wheel the process by which we are made over is not visible to the eye of man in the first part of the process. It may yield results that are visible to the world but the actual form and appearance of the vessel looks just like it did before the process took place. There might be some that take note and say there is something different about you but they can't see it with the visible eye.

The second part of the process is a different matter indeed. Isaiah 26:19 Thy dead men shall live, together with my dead body shall they arise. Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust: for thy dew is as the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the dead.

1 Corinthians 15:42-44 So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption: 43 It is sown in dishonour; it is raised in glory: it is sown in weakness; it is raised in power: 44 It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body.

Philippians 3:20-21 For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: 21 Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.

I never have been particularly fond of the appearance of my vessel. I certainly am not proud of the marred vessel that it is at present as there is much sin that has occurred in this old clay pot. One thing is for sure though. When Jesus brings forth the new vessel with spot or blemish then and only then will I be satisfied and I have assurance that He will be satisfied to have an un-marred vessel.

I don't know if God has enough clay to fill in all the cracks in my clay pot. 8-(
