Subject: Hoard it or chunk it

Ecclesiastes 3:6 A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;

From the practical standpoint we realize that "a time to get" is to "get it while it's hot." "It's on sale so now is the time to get it." These are things we are familar with and it just makes sense to act when you can get the best deal.

We all know that sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. When we get too heavy it is time to lose weight. When you take an unpopular stand even though it is the right stand you may lose friends. In that case it is time to lose them. We need to be careful of who we make friends with.

From a spiritual angle we look at getting and losing as gain or loss. We are told that at the judgment seat of Christ (not the White Throne Judgment of Rev. 20:11)when Christians are judged there will be gain or loss. The Christian will either get or lose. 1 Corinthians 3:13-15 Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is. 14 If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. 15 If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.

Getting and losing is a natural fact of life. We all experience it.

A time to keep. Again there are natural occurences that will fit nicely with this part of the verse. We have the saying, "He, she or it is a keeper". There are keepsakes that we get in life. Heirlooms and special mementos etc. are things we tend to keep as long as we live. Family pictures are kept and passed around to the family. When we receive things such as this we tend to keep them. Just as their is a time to keep there comes a time you just have to get rid of some of the accumulation. We have "yard sales" or "rummage sales". Usually if it doesn't sell it is given away or hauled off to the dump. It was time to cast them out. We no longer had need or room for them.

Spiritually we have commitments to our Lord we are to keep and there are things in our lives we need to cast off. Our old worldly ways need to be cast off and the time is now if they have not already been cast off. We are to keep the faith. We are to cast off self righteousness. Philippians 3:7-9 But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. 8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, 9 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:

We all need constantly to take a personal inventory of our lives and see how we stack up in the departments of getting, losing, keeping and casting off. We are the Lord's and He is worthy of every effort that we can make to stay true to Him and the calling He has placed on the lives of every individual Christian.

Thanks Hillbilly. The part about taking Inventory really rings home. I just took a course called Life's Healing Choices and I am going on a Retreat in April and plan to slow down and take inventory.

Taking inventory is something we all need to do often. Commune with God and ask Him to show you the things you might not see. I have never taken an inventory that I didn't miss something. God will see it all.

I'm really good at the 'getting, losing, and keeping' and not so good at the 'casting off.' I have heaps and piles of useless things because of this. Talk about taking inventory!!!

I don't do garage sales because it really makes me mad when people try to bargain when I've already put a fair price. So I donate to Catholic Charities, Women's shelters and Good Will... grin
Time to get some bags filled!

After my husband died and I was getting ready to move into a mobile home in downtown Lompoc I really had to do a lot of "casting away." Some of it was painful because they were that meant a lot to him (he was a hoarder) but I just gritted my teeth and did it. Have never regretted it.

just look at the memories you have hoarded never to be cast away.

I have heard people who lost everything to fire or storm say of all the treasures they lost the ones they missed the most were the pictures that had captured their lives and brought back to mind precious memories that would grow dim with time.
