Subject: The Table is Spread

Matthew 4:4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

Oh how much greater our spiritual life would be if we would but heed this admonition by our Lord. Jesus had not eaten for forty days and had to have been famished yet He recognized a far greater need. That need was found in the spiritual and not in the material realm. God has a table spread that few pull up a chair thereat.

We feed on natural foods to stay healthy and strong that we may go about our daily lives without weakness. Would to God that we would feed our spiritual man as we feed our natural man. Too often we neglect the spiritual nourishment that is far more important than eating "three squares a day".

When Jesus stopped at the well at Samaria and talked to the woman about spiritual water He had not taken food for some time. When his disciples returned to him with food they urged him to eat but He said to them: John 4:32-34 "-- I have meat to eat that ye know not of. 33 Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him ought to eat? 34 Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work." Jesus had been feasting on spiritual food that his disciples were not aware of.

Little Samuel knew the lesson well and it was written of him: "And Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the ground." (1 Samuel 3:19) Little Samuel feed at God's table as a person starved to death. Not even the crumbs were to fall to the ground. Samuel feasted on the Word of God and then licked the plate. Oh to have such a hunger for the words and things of God that our inner man would grow fat with the rich food at God's table. We have it backwards and glut the outward man while we starve the inward man. In so doing we deprive God of being the servants we could be.
