Psalms 40:2-3 He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. 3 And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.

"From the gutter most to the utter most!" This is one of the most often heard testimonies heard from Fundamentalist Christians. It is not a flippant saying but a testimony based on the deep knowledge of where a person is before coming to Jesus for salvation. it is an exclamation of the knowledge of our position in Christ after we are brought out of the horrible pit of sin.

The Bible tells us: "And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually." (Genesis 6:5) Also in Genesis 8:21 we read "for the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth;" This is every person's beginning point. David said " Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me." (Psalms 51:5)

The wonderful news in the passage though is that we don't have to stay in the "horrible pit". We don't have to live in the gutter. David said he was brought up out of the pit and miry clay and that God set his feet on a "solid rock" The miry clay is a reference to the substance God made Adam from. It is out mortal substance. We don't stay in that condition either. (1 Corinthians chapter 15)

The "rock" is a reference to Jesus and it is in Jesus that our life takes on a new meaning and direction. ("He established my goings") The Christian is to allow Jesus to direct his paths and order his steps. If our goings are established by Jesus then we won't have to worry about taking a wrong turn on the path we are traveling.

"He hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God": The change that occurs to the soul brings about a new song in the heart that wants to praise our God continually. For a great perspective on this read Psalms 145 through 150. Can there be any doubt as to the praise that was brought about from the heart and lips of David due to God setting his feet on the "Rock" and establishing his goings?

"Many shall see it, and fear, and trust in the Lord." David's experiences with God became his testimony. Through out the 150 Psalms (not all written by David) we see the results of trusting God. We see the benefit in worshiping Him. Through experience our testimony grows like David's. Our life for God should not be his but this light should be set up on a candle stick for the world to see. It is though our experiences with God that we may testify through experience what the Lord has done for us. This testimony in turn can be used by God's Spirit to convince others to trust in Jesus' sacrifice and His goodness that they might be saved. Out personal testimony is the most important witness we have for Jesus. May we all use it for the glory of our Saviour that others might trust in the Lord and be saved.

The closing song for this morning's service was "Nothing but the Blood." Such a great message. Nothing that we can do before we are saved is worth anything. Nothing but what Jesus did for us on the cross can save us.

is worth anything unless it is done by the Holy Spirit directing us and moving us.

Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

Thanks for the input. True and appropriate.

My daughter and hubby have let us keep our grandbaby as much as we want before the move, so I've been pretty much tied up with her. They leave this Saturday for Seattle. 8-(
Thanks for this timely message, HB. I haven't always been aware of how much Gd is a part of my life, but through your studies, I've come to know him a lot better. Thank you!

I understand where you are coming from. My daughter is going through a very unpleasant divorce (not her fault). Right now Pat and I get to watch her three little ones quite often for several days at a time. Please pray that she will find an apartment where she can keep them with her. She is attending college and working as a waitress. It is tough for all of us. We love the little boys but they would all be better off with her than being split between his mother and his girlfriend. When a family breaks up it is terrible.

I've been there and am still there with my grandsons. Much of your heart will go with them I know.

Your consolation is that you will still be in close contact and through the web and telephone they will still be near you even though a couple thousand miles away. And there will be that occasionally visit where your heart will be renewed and you will be able to hold that precious little girl again.

I pray that God will keep all safe and well and you will see them often.

God bless
