Genesis 45:9-16 Haste ye, and go up to my father, and say unto him, Thus saith thy son Joseph, God hath made me lord of all Egypt: come down unto me, tarry not: 10 And thou shalt dwell in the land of Goshen, and thou shalt be near unto me, thou, and thy children, and thy children's children, and thy flocks, and thy herds, and all that thou hast: 11 And there will I nourish thee; for yet there are five years of famine; lest thou, and thy household, and all that thou hast, come to poverty. 12 And, behold, your eyes see, and the eyes of my brother Benjamin, that it is my mouth that speaketh unto you. 13 And ye shall tell my father of all my glory in Egypt, and of all that ye have seen; and ye shall haste and bring down my father hither. 14 And he fell upon his brother Benjamin's neck, and wept; and Benjamin wept upon his neck. 15 Moreover he kissed all his brethren, and wept upon them: and after that his brethren talked with him. 16 And the fame thereof was heard in Pharaoh's house, saying, Joseph's brethren are come: and it pleased Pharaoh well, and his servants.
Joseph, as a type of Jesus, is making provision for his family. It is an exciting time and joy abounds. The land of Goshen was the best and richest land in Egypt. Well watered and perfect for the flocks and herds. Jesus told His disciples one time in John 14:1-4 " Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. 2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. 4 And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know." A prepared place for a prepared people. Joseph, as second in command in the kingdom, had the authority to give to his people whatever he wanted to. Pharaoh had delivered it into his hand. The Father in Heaven has delivered everything into the hands of Jesus.
"And thou shalt be near unto me, thou, and thy children, and thy children's children, and thy flocks, and thy herds, and all that thou hast:" Joseph's desire was for all his kinsmen to be with him with all their wives and little ones. Jesus is no different and the narrative fairly describes the heart of Jesus and His desire to be with all His "brethren".
"And ye shall tell my father of all my glory in Egypt, and of all that ye have seen; and ye shall haste and bring down my father hither." Remembering Joseph's father is Israel who was Jacob and remembering also he is in type the "Israel of God", His chosen people. "Go back and tell the glad tidings that I am alive and well and that I have prepared a place for you. A place where you can be satisfied and flourish". This is a message Joseph wanted to get out to all his kinsmen back and Canaan and it is a message Jesus wants us to get out today. Jesus says: "I am alive and well and the invitation is to come." Matthew 11:28-30 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
What Joseph was offering was like a dream. Too good to be true yet it was. Jacob and his sons had been struggling. There was drought. Food and fodder were scarce. They were facing ruin and possibly starvation, depending on the severity of the next 5 years. Can you even imagine a seven year drought where no crops can be planted nor gathered. Where all the pasture dries up and the livestock cannot feed? We think things are calamitous when we have a two or three months drought.
As Joseph's brothers were about to go back and tell the good news it would be accepted with some doubt. Nothing could be that good! They would be thought of as exaggerating. Isn't that in a sense how we look at God's promises and the preparation that has been made for us. The land "flowing with milk and honey" was typology of the land Jesus has prepared for us. 1 Corinthians 2:9-11 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. 10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. 11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.
God tells us in His word and testifies through the Spirit that heaven is real and better than can be imagined. We are as the Queen of Sheba when she came into Solomon's kingdom: "And she said to the king, It was a true report which I heard in mine own land of thine acts, and of thy wisdom: Howbeit I believed not their words, until I came, and mine eyes had seen it: and, behold, the one half of the greatness of thy wisdom was not told me: for thou exceedest the fame that I heard." (2 Chron. 9:5-6)
The temporary parting is sweet with hugs, kisses and tears all around. This journey back will not be as sad as the last one as they look forward to telling their father of Joseph's glory. There will be only one thing they will dread. "Fessing up". With the telling of Joseph being alive and over the land of Egypt will come the necessity of telling Jacob what they had done to cause so many years of grief to him and Joseph. In type this is confession before the Father in Heaven of our sometime evil and contemptuous ways. There will be forgiveness but the shame will still be there.
Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
