A Catholic friend of mine and Caren's from another site posted this yesterday and I wanted to share it:

Today is the 17th Sunday in ordinary time. It relates the Eucharist, or Communion, to its familial nature where all of us participate along with God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as one family. This explains much about our relationship with God, and places family-type obligations on us with one another.

2 Kings 4:42-44 reveals how Elisha foreshadowed Jesus' miracle with the loaves and fishes and introduces us to the idea of a God who cares about our daily sustenance like a Father cares about his children.

This theme is expanded in Psalm 145:10-11, 15-18 where this Godly concern is equated to Justice.

Paul exhorts all of us in Ephesians 4:1-6 to live and worship together in peace, like a family whose members are one and who have so much in common.

Jesus in John 6:1-15 draws from the feeding of Israel in the desert with manna as he, the new Moses, feeds 5000 people with 5 barley loaves and 2 fish with 12 baskets of food left over after everybody was stuffed. This shows Fatherly generosity, and gives credibility to what he is saying about Salvation.

Fr Tom also pointed out that Jesus with this miracle has showed authority over the Bread and that, later on in Chapter 6, he will show authority over the Body by walking on water - and then will declare that His Body is the Bread of Life.

"Lord, we receive the sacrament which celebrates the memory of the death and resurrection of Christ your Son. May this gift bring us closer to our eternal Salvation. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord." +

Another Sunday, another inspiration! :-)
