Genesis 50:22-26 And Joseph dwelt in Egypt, he, and his father's house: and Joseph lived an hundred and ten years. 23 And Joseph saw Ephraim's children of the third generation: the children also of Machir the son of Manasseh were brought up upon Joseph's knees. 24 And Joseph said unto his brethren, I die: and God will surely visit you, and bring you out of this land unto the land which he sware to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. 25 And Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you, and ye shall carry up my bones from hence. 26 So Joseph died, being an hundred and ten years old: and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.
Thus ends the story of Joseph and the Book of Genesis. When all is said and done we have on irrefutable fact shown to us in this book of beginnings. Typically everyones life ends in a "coffin". Joseph's coffin was in Egypt. Egypt is a type of the world and as such everyone's body is left here. The hope we see is that Joseph took an oath from his people making them swear that when they left Egypt they would take him with them. In this subtle reference we see a great truth and hope for God's people. He isn't going to leave us in this world. Abraham went to Egypt and God brought him out. Isaac went to Egypt and God brought him out. Jacob died in Egypt and they took him out and buried him in the promised land. Joseph went out with Moses in the exodus. Jesus went to Egypt and God brought Him out and it is declared this was done on purpose. Matthew 2:14-15 When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt: 15 And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son. The prophecy being referred to in Matthew is found in Hosea 11:1 When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt. Note that in Hosea you would identify the son as being Jacob and his progeny. While this was true another truth was being shown for future generations. Old Testament events foreshadowed New Testament events and truth's and this was no different. This is why it is so important to study types and shadows of New Testament events and truths in the light of the Old Testament history. Only God could have worked these things out in such detail in the lives of men who lived so long ago so that they would reveal the foreknowledge of God of details that are yet to be seen or known.
God was adamant that His people were not to return to Egypt once He brought them out: Jeremiah 42:15-17 And now therefore hear the word of the LORD, ye remnant of Judah; Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; If ye wholly set your faces to enter into Egypt, and go to sojourn there; 16 Then it shall come to pass, that the sword, which ye feared, shall overtake you there in the land of Egypt, and the famine, whereof ye were afraid, shall follow close after you there in Egypt; and there ye shall die. 17 So shall it be with all the men that set their faces to go into Egypt to sojourn there; they shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence: and none of them shall remain or escape from the evil that I will bring upon them.
We only pass this way once. Reincarnation teaches that you come back in another form or life. Some believe there are 7 stages to perfection and you must go through the tests and trials over and over until you progress to the next level until achieving perfection. God says "once is enough". You have one shot at it so you better get it right. You will either recognize God for who He is and what He expects of us in this world or you enter the doors of death without Him. None of us will come back for re-testing.
Joseph died with the expectation of a resurrection. He wanted his resurrection to be in the beloved land of promise and so it will be. We as Joseph will lay down in the dust one day and we too have the expectation of being raised from death into a glorious body fashioned like unto our Lord's. (Phlp. 3:21) As the butterfly emerges from it's grave clothes wrapped body we will one day burst forth in the beauty of our Lord. We won't be staying in Egypt. We have an appointment in the "Promised Land".
We have another truth shown to us in the Book of Genesis we should grasp. Psalm 39:5 Behold, thou hast made my days as an handbreadth; and mine age is as nothing before thee: verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity. Selah.
Every person we looked at and studied had "warts". All the great patriarchs of the Bible were sinners. Not one pleased God in every detail of his or her life and many of the greatest failed miserably time after time. Jacob was a great man of God in many respects but he was also a lowdown scoundrel on many occasions. Thus we see the lives of the great men of God mirror our own experiences. We all have "warts". Look at Peter. Denying our Lord. Cursing. Impatient and standing in God's way on occasion. The sin of Adam truly has been handed down from generation to generation and it has skipped no one. All have sinned and come short of the glory of God and as the wages of sin is death we too will have our "coffin in Egypt".
