CHAPTER 34
Genesis 34:1-7 And Dinah the daughter of Leah, which she bare unto Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land. 2 And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her, and lay with her, and defiled her. 3 And his soul clave unto Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the damsel, and spake kindly unto the damsel. 4 And Shechem spake unto his father Hamor, saying, Get me this damsel to wife. 5 And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter: now his sons were with his cattle in the field: and Jacob held his peace until they were come. 6 And Hamor the father of Shechem went out unto Jacob to commune with him. 7 And the sons of Jacob came out of the field when they heard it: and the men were grieved, and they were very wroth, because he had wrought folly in Israel in lying with Jacob's daughter; which thing ought not to be done.
It does not take long for Jacob's peaceful existence to be shattered. He has twelve children. Eleven boys and one girl. Dinah is next to the youngest of Jacob's children. Joseph was the youngest. Don't you know that little gal was special to him and to her brothers?
After settling in to their new home Dinah decides it's time to get acquainted with the the others girls she would be neighbor to. The fact that Dinah is going to meet with the "daughters of the land" shows that several years had passed. I would suspect that Dinah was at least 15 to 16 years old and as was the case with her grandmother and great-grandmother she was a "looker".
Shechem spots her and goes wild with desire. He takes her and rapes her. Dinah is now defiled in the eyes of all as this is the way of the middle eastern people. Who would now take her to wife. Shechem is not satisfied with his defiling her he now wants her for his wife and speaks lovingly and kindly to her. We are not told whether she consents to marrying him but we do know from looking ahead to verse 26 that when Dinah's brothers get revenge she is in Shechem's house. It is very possible since Shechem was a prince that his father Hamor was the ruler over the Hivites and thus would be as the office of king.
The Hivites were a pagan, idol worshiping people whom God came to despise for there ways. They were descendants of Ham through the line of Canaan so would be near kin to the Canaanites. They were among the people whom God commanded for Israel to totally wipe out after the Exodus. They had crossed a line with God and their evil works were to bring judgment on their heads.
Deuteronomy 7:1-6 When the LORD thy God shall bring thee into the land whither thou goest to possess it, and hath cast out many nations before thee, the Hittites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and mightier than thou; 2 And when the LORD thy God shall deliver them before thee; thou shalt smite them, and utterly destroy them; thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor shew mercy unto them: 3 Neither shalt thou make marriages with them; thy daughter thou shalt not give unto his son, nor his daughter shalt thou take unto thy son. 4 For they will turn away thy son from following me, that they may serve other gods: so will the anger of the LORD be kindled against you, and destroy thee suddenly. 5 But thus shall ye deal with them; ye shall destroy their altars, and break down their images, and cut down their groves, and burn their graven images with fire. 6 For thou art an holy people unto the LORD thy God: the LORD thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth.
Contrary to popular belief the God of the Bible is segregationist in his wishes for his people. The above passage shows why. In the Book of Acts we are given to understand it was God who divided the three major ethnic groups which we know as the races. Acts 17:24-27 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; 25 Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things; 26 And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation; 27 That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:
Coming from Adam all races are of one blood. This is scientific fact as it doesn't matter who blood is taken from for a transfusion it will work as long as the types are compatible. But being of one blood does not mean that God has sanctioned mixing what He separated. The passage in Acts is referring to the passages in Genesis where God appointed the lands each of the three sons of Noah were to inhabit. In Genesis 10 verses 1-5 we are given the division given to the descendants of Japheth. Notice in verse 5: "By these were the isles of the Gentiles divided in their lands; every one after his tongue, after their families, in their nations."
After Japheth in verses 6-20 we have the descendants of Ham. In verse 20 it is said: "These are the sons of Ham, after their families, after their tongues, in their countries, and in their nations." Two things about this to notice. 1st notice that the descendants of Ham are not called Gentiles. God identified the Gentiles as the Japhethic peoples. Secondly if you go back to the cited verses you will find the historic enemies of Israel and you will find Sodom and Gomorrah listed as boundary cities to the land God assigned to them.
Finally you will find the descendants of Shem listed in verses 22-31. Interestingly in verse 22 we have another statement to the dividing of the land and also in verse 25 we have the statement that it was in the days of Peleg that the dividing of the earth took place.
God knew full well the racial strifes that would take place down through the centuries of time and He made provision for man to avoid this But since when has man listened to God? In Genesis 11 we have the first mention of a "one world government" and it was definitely anti-God. At least it was anti Jehovah God. God saw it and didn't like it. He therefore scattered these "one worlders" and He did so by assigning different languages to the different peoples. This in chapter 11 is by way of explanation of what is quoted above in chapter 10 with the segregating according to their families and tongues or languages. Until Babel they all spoke the language of Noah which I believe to be Hebrew but I can't prove it.
God had a reason for the distinct races and I don't think He intended for man to try to undo what He did. If we look among the animals and birds we see they have maintained their distinctive families. It is only when man intervenes does this change. For instance the Liger which is Lion mixed with Tiger. Birds remain true to their specific breeds and again it is only when man meddles that this rule is broken. If there are instances in nature where there is an exception we need to understand that exceptions prove rules. We also can see that if it does happen in nature it doesn't result in a new specie. It may be like the mule which is a mixture of horse and donkey. The mule is sterile and their has been only one case of a fertile mule to my knowledge.
God's rule also applied to the vegetable kingdom. Leviticus 19:19 Ye shall keep my statutes. Thou shalt not let thy cattle gender with a diverse kind: thou shalt not sow thy field with mingled seed: neither shall a garment mingled of linen and woollen come upon thee.
I have never read in the Bible where God changed His mind about any of this. Because man has crossbred his livestock and mingled seeds until they don't produce true does not make God pleased with it. He may allow us to take these liberties but it is not in His will.
"For I am the LORD, I change not;--" (Malachi 3:6)
