Genesis 37:9-11 And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me. 10 And he told it to his father, and to his brethren: and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth? 11 And his brethren envied him; but his father observed the saying.
The dream is similar but encompasses a greater extent of the bowing. Again while there is a "near view" and a "far view" in the previous dream there can only be a "far view" to this dream. Notice carefully who bows. The sun (Jacob), the moon (Rachel), and the eleven stars which would of necessity be all twelve of Joseph's brother's including Benjamin. This is the understanding that Jacob has when he rebukes Joseph.: "Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth?"
The problem with a literal fulfillment of this vision is that Rachel is dead! She died giving birth to Benjamin. This precludes the possibility of there being a natural and near future fulfillment of this prophetic. dream. Fortunately God has seen fit to reveal to us the time of this fulfillment. While the reference is not exact the elements of the dream are there. The vision is not about Joseph being bowed to but it is about the one who Joseph typifies. He is the one before whom every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess that He is Lord.
Revelation 12:1-5 And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars: 2 And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered. 3 And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads. 4 And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born. 5 And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne.
Can any doubt the apparition in the vision of John in Revelation is but to Israel? The woman is Israel in mystery form. She is clothed with the glory of God. The moon reflects the light and glory of God and it is that reflection of God that she is standing on. On her head is the 12 stars representing the 12 Tribes of Israel which includes Joseph. Joseph then is not what the vision is about. She is great with child and is in her birth pains in the vision. She delivers a "man child". "And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron" There is only one person who rules all nations with a rod of iron. Revelation 19:15-16 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. 16 And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS. Revelation 2:25-27 But that which ye have already hold fast till I come. 26 And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations: 27 And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father.
We further notice the in the passage in Revelation 12 that the dragon is before the woman:: "the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born". In the story of the birth of Christ remember that the wise men were warned to not return to Herod but return home a different way and then the order went out to slay all the male children of the Jews who were 2 years old and under. Joseph, husband of Mary, was warned by an angel in a dream to flee to Egypt. Satan tried to prevent the birth before it could happen and he could not. He then tried to destroy Jesus after the birth, but he could not. The dragon has been trying to destroy the Church since the resurrection to try to prevent the fulfillment of the scriptures concerning the church and his ultimate doom since that time until now.
Can any doubt the second recorded vision has to do with the Messiah and the ultimate bowing to Him. Even Joseph's mother will bow before Him at this time for it is after the resurrection at the end of the tribulation and as the Kingdom on earth starts.
The dream stirs Joseph's brothers all the more against him but Jacob took note of the dream and wondered at it's meaning. Jacob had several first hand meetings with God and he must of wondered if this was not what Joseph was experiencing. The answer of course was yes but Jacob could not know the depth in which the coming Messiah would be revealed through this favorite son of his.
