Genesis 37:31-36 And they took Joseph's coat, and killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the coat in the blood; 32 And they sent the coat of many colours, and they brought it to their father; and said, This have we found: know now whether it be thy son's coat or no. 33 And he knew it, and said, It is my son's coat; an evil beast hath devoured him; Joseph is without doubt rent in pieces. 34 And Jacob rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his loins, and mourned for his son many days. 35 And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he said, For I will go down into the grave unto my son mourning. Thus his father wept for him. 36 And the Midianites sold him into Egypt unto Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh's, and captain of the guard.

An interesting thing about all this exchange from the time that Joseph's brothers conspired to sell him is the intermingling of the names "Midianites and Ishmaelites". In our previous study we saw Ishmaelites in verse vss. 25 and 27. In verse 28 it is Ishmaelites and Midianites and in verse 36 above we see again it is Midianites. What gives? Probably the truth lies in Ishmaelites that had settled in Midian. That would be kind of like "African American". Are they African or American. Of course the answer is "yes".

After Reuben has settled down and accepted the fate of Joseph they devise a way to tell their father that Joseph isn't coming home. They kill a goat and dip the coat of many colours in it and go back to Jacob and show him the coat. Jacob jumps to the conclusion that Joseph has been killed by some wild beast and is dead. Jacob's conclusion relieves them from putting forth the idea that he is dead and thereby prevents an open lie from the brothers.

The sorrow of Jacob is manifest the same way that Reuben showed his grief. Jacob rips his clothing and then in addition he dons sack cloth and ashes as a sign of mourning.

The 10 brothers have returned to their daddy and Joseph is in Egypt where he will be in slavery for a few years until God elevates him to the position of second in command to all of Egypt. Egypt in scripture is a type of the world and Joseph is destined to rule as "prince" under the king Pharaoh. In this scenario of Joseph as Jesus the Pharaoh in type represents the Father over all. As Jesus is at the right hand of God showing Himself to be the "power of God" so will Joseph be the power of Pharaoh.

As to the blood sprinkled on the royal coat of Joseph there is a well known verse which shows that Jesus will have blood sprinkled on his royal apparel when he comes back. Revelation 19:13 And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.

As we close out chapter 37 and go into chapter 38 the Bible breaks from the story of Joseph and relates wickedness, disobedience and fornication of Judah and his some of his sons. Why the narrative breaks from the life of Joseph for 30 verses before resuming I don't know. What I do see in this break though is that if we examine history from the crucifixion to the 2nd Advent of Christ we find a long passage of time. Approximately 2,000 years at this writing. The events of chapter 38 also reflect the wickedness, disobedience and spiritual fornication of the people of Israel for this 2,000 year period of time. This then may be a "thumbnail" of the way God sees Israel during this parenthetical dispensation called the "Age of Grace". Israel is in apostasy and will be until Jesus comes back.

Lest on think these words a little harsh remember that Israel is where she is today because of the rejection of Jesus Christ. She was dispersed among the nations because of spiritual wickedness and fornication as is attested to many times in the Old Testament. If this scenario is true then the prophecy it exhibits is even more detailed than is apparent to the cursory reader of the Bible as opposed to the serious Bible student.

by his brothers just because they were jealous. I know it was all part of God's plan, but my human feelings of anger and indignation at the treatment are distracting me... I'll go and pray for calmness... *-)
