CHAPTER 39
Genesis 39:1-6 And Joseph was brought down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him of the hands of the Ishmeelites, which had brought him down thither. 2 And the LORD was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian. 3 And his master saw that the LORD was with him, and that the LORD made all that he did to prosper in his hand. 4 And Joseph found grace in his sight, and he served him: and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand. 5 And it came to pass from the time that he had made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that the LORD blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake; and the blessing of the LORD was upon all that he had in the house, and in the field. 6 And he left all that he had in Joseph's hand; and he knew not ought he had, save the bread which he did eat. And Joseph was a goodly person, and well favoured.
While Judah is messing up back in the promised land Joseph is beginning his new life as a slave in Egypt. The transaction is made between the Ishmaelites and Potiphar, a captain of the guard to Pharaoh, the ruler in Egypt.
"And the LORD was with Joseph". If someone came up to Joseph at this point in time and said to Joseph; "Boy Joseph, I see the Lord is with you". Do you think Joseph at this point believed that the Lord was with him? Here is a man who is hated by most of his family, betrayed by most of his family, sold as a slave to the Ishmaelites, carried into a foreign country and there sold as a slave to a foreign master. Joseph at this point might have said "If God is with me I sure would hate for Him to be against me!"
At a future time Joseph would look back and see the blessing in his trials. He would realize the New Testament scripture that says: "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose." (Rom. 8:28) Have you ever noticed that nothing grows on the top of a high mountain. Joseph is down in a valley of trials and temptation and he is planted in fertile ground. Joseph is growing. Notice after the statement that the Lord was with Joseph that it says of Joseph "he was a prosperous man". How was Joseph prosperous? It certainly wasn't in personal wealth. What did he own at this point in his life? The only thing he might call his own was the clothes on his back and the sandals on his feet. He was dead broke and a slave. Since God moved Moses to pen these words we are going to believe that God saw what no man could see nor conceive of. God saw a man was poor in possessions but "rich toward God". (Luke 12:21) As Jesus told the Church in Smyrna in Rev. 2:6; "I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) --". Not only did God see the potential in Joseph but He also knew how that He was going to give Joseph the Midas touch in matters of Potiphar's business. "And his master saw that the LORD was with him, and that the LORD made all that he did to prosper in his hand".
Joseph is very much like Daniel. Both were young when carried into slavery and both were rewarded by God for their fidelity to Him. Every thing Joseph did was blessed by God and his stature, in the eyes of Potiphar, grew immensely. Just as Joseph would become second in command over Egypt he is now being made 2nd in command over the house of Potiphar. Potiphar had no worries concerning Joseph because Joseph was honourable in all he did for his master. Whether over his household, his "stocks and bonds" or over his farms the word of Joseph was carried out by all he dealt with for his master. So trustworthy was Joseph that Potiphar quit checking the "books" and "bank statements".
In short Joseph was "Christ like" in all his dealings. Complete honesty. Overcoming any temptations. Always dealing as he felt God would have him to and I believe always worshipping God. Joseph is a great type and picture of Jesus. If you look at his master as being godlike and you look at Joseph's unwillingness to do anything that would displease his master then you can see the resemblance of Jesus and His obedience to His Father in heaven.
1 Corinthians 15:27-28 For he (the Father) hath put all things under his (Jesus') feet. But when he (the Father) saith all things are put under him (Jesus), it is manifest that he (the Father) is excepted, which did put all things under him (Jesus). 28 And when all things shall be subdued unto him (Jesus), then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him (the Father) that put all things under him (Jesus), that God may be all in all.
Joseph was second only to Potiphar. Jesus was second only to the Father in Heaven.
