In reply to: dori 's message, "Gosh, Hillbilly!" on 13:50:25 03/12/12 Mon

at the number of times I have read passages before something "jumps out" at me. I am left wondering how I missed it for so long when it was there all the time.

God has to reveal things to us for us to see it. The Apostles accompanied Jesus for 3 years and didn't understand the scriptures until He opened their understanding of the scriptures. (Luke 24:45) This took place after His resurrection. Scripture was not alive and real to them until God opened their understanding.

I mean... here they were traveling with Jesus and witnessing his actions on a daily basis, and they still didn't get it. I guess they had trouble believing their own eyes and ears.

"I guess they had trouble believing their own eyes and ears."

They were depending on their natural senses instead of the Spirit of God. They were judging the life of Christ by their own physical needs and desires. When Jesus told them He was going to lay down His life for His sheep they judged His statement by their own experience and each new he was not willing to die for people that were not close to them. To them it seemed an unacceptable statement because they did not see the "big picture" of His salvation plan.

Paul stated it in 1 Corinthians 2:14 "But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned."

When Jesus opened their understanding He imparted His Spirit to them in a new and special way. That way was opening to them the "mind of Christ" 1 Corinthians 2:16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

Simply put, with the indwelling Holy Spirit, we have access to the mind of God in matters of spiritual discernment. God will show you the deepest meanings of even seemingly simple scriptures when you meet His conditions.

One of my favorite Bible passages and one, I think, that is not emphasized enough in the churches or Christian writings. All those who proclaim to be Christian should be made keenly aware of what this passage means IMO. I believe that would help clear up the difference in so many churches and their theologies. The key is "spiritual discernment."

Spiritual discernment among professing Christians would of necessity mean "One mind". There would be harmony as the accord would come from One Spirit. There would be no private interpretation of scripture.

We always have to do things the hard way, it seems. 8-(

God put it all out there for Man to see, but Jesus had to spell it out for us--his death and resurrection.
