Genesis 42:18-22 And Joseph said unto them the third day, This do, and live; for I fear God: 19 If ye be true men, let one of your brethren be bound in the house of your prison: go ye, carry corn for the famine of your houses: 20 But bring your youngest brother unto me; so shall your words be verified, and ye shall not die. And they did so. 21 And they said one to another, We are verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the anguish of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us. 22 And Reuben answered them, saying, Spake I not unto you, saying, Do not sin against the child; and ye would not hear? therefore, behold, also his blood is required.
The Bible is clear: "Be sure your sin will find you out. " (Num. 32:23) Old sins come back to haunt and you can never be free until sin is confessed, repented of and put away. This is the state the 10 brothers find themselves in They believe that Joseph is dead at their hands. Even though Reuben spoke against their actions he did not move to stop their actions. Reuben was as guilty as they. Here again we have a truth that will foreshadow a later truth concerning Jesus. Nicodemus spoke up for Jesus but he did not really try to stop the taking of Jesus. There was remorse shown to the extent that it was he that boldly went and begged the body of Jesus but this did not absolve him of guilt. When Pilate would have freed Jesus the Jews were willing to bring blood guiltiness on their own heads and their children;s. Matthew 27:24-25 When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it. 25 Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children. Genesis 9:5 And surely your blood of your lives will I require; at the hand of every beast will I require it, and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man's brother will I require the life of man.
Pilate thought water could wash away any guilt on his part but the blood guiltiness of Jesus is not washed away by water. Pilate remained guilty in the eyes of God because he let fear get between him and right judgment. Jesus let Pilate know what he was about to do was sin. John 19:11 Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin. The Jews bore a greater responsibility but this still did not absolve Pilate. So it was with the brothers of Joseph. The ones that delivered Joseph might bear the greater sin but no one was absolved from sin because even the ones that might have been against the action did not try to prevent the selling of Joseph.
Sin always has consequences. Sin can have consequences long after a person is dead. Sin can have consequences on your children. You might sow the wild oats but the harvest may fall on your great great grandchildren. Numbers 14:18 The LORD is longsuffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation.
Your sins may impact your family for generations. Note carefully that this verse does not say that God will punish even to the fourth generation for the sin committed by a person. It says He will visit the iniquity to the fourth generation. People often overlook the first two clauses. God is willing to forgive iniquity and transgression but He will in no wise clear the guilty. Ezekiel 18:20 The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.
You will reap what you sow. When God forgives sin He does so on the merit of the sacrifice of Jesus. This pertains to the next life. What you set in motion by your sin will come back to bite you in this life and it may well cause your children to do the same things you do. You were taught by your parents and your character in large measure was set by your upbringing. If daddy or mommy did it then it had to be all right. A pattern is set and this pattern of actions could well be against the teaching and or commandment of God. A word said cannot be un-said. If it bites and hurts the damage is done. A bullet fired from a gun is going to hit what is in the path of it's flight. This is what Joseph's brothers are finding out.
Earlier actions are coming back to haunt them. They recognize the hand of God against them in this and truly the hand of God was in all of this. They could not know the one they had so maltreated was standing before them and meting judgment albeit in the case of Joseph he was like a cat toying with a mouse. Israel will one day be greatly surprised that the one who was put to death by the hand of the Jews is standing before them to call their guilt to their remembrance.
"And they said one to another, We are verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the anguish of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us." They refused mercy to Joseph but in the end Joseph will show mercy to them. They saw his anguish and heard his pleadings but they turned blind eyes and deaf ears to his plight. So much similarity with the mistreatment of Jesus by His "brothers" according to the flesh.
