Genesis 43:15-26 And the men took that present, and they took double money in their hand, and Benjamin; and rose up, and went down to Egypt, and stood before Joseph. 16 And when Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the ruler of his house, Bring these men home, and slay, and make ready; for these men shall dine with me at noon. 17 And the man did as Joseph bade; and the man brought the men into Joseph's house. 18 And the men were afraid, because they were brought into Joseph's house; and they said, Because of the money that was returned in our sacks at the first time are we brought in; that he may seek occasion against us, and fall upon us, and take us for bondmen, and our asses. 19 And they came near to the steward of Joseph's house, and they communed with him at the door of the house, 20 And said, O sir, we came indeed down at the first time to buy food: 21 And it came to pass, when we came to the inn, that we opened our sacks, and, behold, every man's money was in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight: and we have brought it again in our hand. 22 And other money have we brought down in our hands to buy food: we cannot tell who put our money in our sacks. 23 And he said, Peace be to you, fear not: your God, and the God of your father, hath given you treasure in your sacks: I had your money. And he brought Simeon out unto them. 24 And the man brought the men into Joseph's house, and gave them water, and they washed their feet; and he gave their asses provender. 25 And they made ready the present against Joseph came at noon: for they heard that they should eat bread there. 26 And when Joseph came home, they brought him the present which was in their hand into the house, and bowed themselves to him to the earth.
The brothers are in great perplexity at the treatment they are receiving at the hands of this strange ruler of Egypt. Second in power only to Pharaoh yet he treats them familiarly. As the lives and events in these men's lives tell a future story we might well look at what they might teach us about the days just ahead of us. First we notice that even though these were common men in the eyes of royalty they were treated as if they were special. Jesus, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords treats us on a much higher plane than we deserve. The brothers are told they will dine in the ruler's house. To them the question had to be simply' Why? They suspected a trap or 'set up". They had been well treated before yet then they were forced to leave Simeon behind. Now Simeon is restored. They were treated with respect in one moment and then later called spies. All the while this was going on I believe that Joseph was gaging their actions and looking at their character. How would they react to these turns of events that were thrown at them.
We walk daily not knowing what we will face. We are told that we will give account for every idle word.. Matthew 12:36-37 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. 37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned. Is it not possible that we in similar fashion have things thrown at us that we must react to and God judges us on what we say and do under trying circumstances.
On a more prophetic level to the Jews there will come a time that Jesus will reveal Himself to them and until they are convinced there will be much perplexity in their lives just as there was in the lives of men like Nicodemus who struggled with the identity of Jesus for quite a while before wholeheartedly embracing Him.
The men are perplexed at receiving the gift of food from this man without being charged. Again this reflects a time that Jesus will care for His own without it costing them anything. Isaiah 55:1 Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.
Joseph serving them at his table reminds us that there will be a great supper prepared for the children of God. Luke 12:37 Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them.
Lastly we see in this passage how once more the brother's bow before him with their face to the earth. It reminds us that every knee shall one day bow to Jesus Christ. (Isa. 45:23, Rom. 14:11, Phil. 2:10). These brothers had one time mocked Joseph for daring to suggest that they would one day bow to him but here for the third time they are bowing. The Jews who were responsible for putting Jesus to death would have vehemently denied they would one day bow but at the judgment they will do exactly that. Satan, who before the world was made, thought he was better than God or at least equal to him will one day bow and confess that Jesus us Lord. It will be his last act and utterance before going home to the lake of fire.
