Daniel 11:5-6 And the king of the south shall be strong, and one of his princes; and he shall be strong above him, and have dominion; his dominion shall be a great dominion. 6 And in the end of years they shall join themselves together; for the king's daughter of the south shall come to the king of the north to make an agreement: but she shall not retain the power of the arm; neither shall he stand, nor his arm: but she shall be given up, and they that brought her, and he that begat her, and he that strengthened her in these times.
Our last study left us with a "mighty king" whose kingdom was broken and "divided toward the four winds of heaven". The text tells us also that his posterity shall not receive any of the kingdom. Here it would pay us to go back and refresh our memories about this king who in chapter 8 is called the "rough goat". Daniel 8:21-26 And the rough goat is the king of Grecia: and the great horn that is between his eyes is the first king. 22 Now that being broken, whereas four stood up for it, four kingdoms shall stand up out of the nation, but not in his power. (compare this with the text in the last study especially verse 4. We notice the dividing to the four winds but we also note there is no mention of this "mighty king being defeated in battle. In verse 22 above it only states the horn is broken but does not give the credit to the ram which he fought nor any other beast for that matter. Alexander died at the height of his power when his kingdom was at it's strongest. Disease brought him down and not battle.) 23 And in the latter time of their kingdom, (this will be the four kingdoms that come from Alexander's kingdom) when the transgressors are come to the full, a king of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences, shall stand up. 24 And his power shall be mighty, but not by his own power: and he shall destroy wonderfully, and shall prosper, and practise, and shall destroy the mighty and the holy people. 25 And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify himself in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes; (here we see the prophecy jumping forward in time to the anti-Christ) but he shall be broken without hand. (he will be destroyed by the King of Kings and Lord of Lords) 26 And the vision of the evening and the morning which was told is true: wherefore shut thou up the vision; for it shall be for many days.
Bound up in these prophecies which we will be studying in chapter 11 is a time line of events that happened before Jesus came the first time. They are given in amazing detail but one of the most important things to notice as we study is that they will also herald the coming and defeat of the anti-Christ. It pays us to pay careful attention to which of the kingdoms he appears from because this will pinpoint the area to watch in these last days we are in.
In verse 5 we are introduced to the "king of the south". As the time frame of Daniel historically spans more than 300 years the kings will change but the kingdoms will not. The south kingdom will be Egypt. The first king in the prophecy is Ptolemy. He was one of the four generals that the Grecian kingdom was divided to. The other prominent king that will be in these prophecies will be the "king of the north". Egypt lies directly south of the "glorious land" (Dan. 11:16,22) and Syria lies directly north. The "glorious land" is Israel, Abraham's promised land. We will see this local is the center of the prophecies. Syria and the eastern part of Alexander's empire went to Seleucus. I think this is very important. This ties Syria with Babylon (Iraq) and Persia (Iran) in these prophecies. It will be very interesting to watch how this current crises with Egypt plays out as Iran and Syria are very much involved in the rebellion that is now taking place. This in effect is the north and the south kingdoms with Israel in the middle. The other two generals are Gassander who took Macedonia and Lysimachus who laid claim to Thrace. These other two (kingdoms) don't figure into the prophecy just as the attention today is not to these areas. The Egyptian kingdom under Ptolemy rose to power before the Syrian kingdom. So the king of the south has the prominence in the early part of the prophecy. The prince ("and one of his princes") was a general under Alexander who was made a vice regent of Babylonia. He was driven out and fled to Egypt where he was taken in by Ptolemy and made a "prince". He became very strong and through the help of Ptolemy recovers his domain and it eventually becomes stronger than Ptolemy's domain. War breaks out between Syria and Egypt and lasts for several years with
The kings daughter of the south was Bernice and she was offered to the king of the north as a peace offering. She would marry him if he would make peace with Egypt. The agreement was made and the king put away his wife for Bernice. However with all the conniving came disaster. Soon after the agreement was sealed Bernice's father died and she no longer could "retain the power of the arm". The king of the north put her away and went back to his former wife. She wanted the throne for her own son so she poisoned her husband and then had Bernice and her child assassinated. They had sown the wind and they reaped the whirlwind. (Hosea 8:7)
I do not know how the daughter's of the kings fit in these prophecies in these last days but I do know that the word daughter is sometimes used allegorically for a city. Isaiah 52:2 Shake thyself from the dust; arise, and sit down, O Jerusalem: loose thyself from the bands of thy neck, O captive daughter of Zion. Lamentations 2:11 Mine eyes do fail with tears, my bowels are troubled, my liver is poured upon the earth, for the destruction of the daughter of my people; because the children and the sucklings swoon in the streets of the city.
If the word daughter becomes allegorical as the prophecies come to pass today it very well could be that the daughter is allegorical of the capitol city of the country. This is speculation on my part but I do feel very strongly that these prophecies play out in these last days just as the did in the days up to the coming of Jesus the first time. We will do well to keep our eyes on Egypt and Syria keeping in mind that Syria is tied very much to Iran and Iran is formenting much of the unrest in Egypt today. The stage is being set for the false "prince of peace" who will stand up and bring peace to the middle east. It will be a false peace that will only last for about 3 to 3 1/2 years and then he will betray Israel.
Israel is caught between Egypt and Syria today as in a vice. In the days of the king of the north and south there was much destruction and killing in Israel. It will be the same in these last days.
