Daniel 11:20-27 Then shall stand up in his estate a raiser of taxes in the glory of the kingdom: but within few days he shall be destroyed, neither in anger, nor in battle. 21 And in his estate shall stand up a vile person, to whom they shall not give the honour of the kingdom: but he shall come in peaceably, and obtain the kingdom by flatteries. 22 And with the arms of a flood shall they be overflown from before him, and shall be broken; yea, also the prince of the covenant. 23 And after the league made with him he shall work deceitfully: for he shall come up, and shall become strong with a small people. 24 He shall enter peaceably even upon the fattest places of the province; and he shall do that which his fathers have not done, nor his fathers' fathers; he shall scatter among them the prey, and spoil, and riches: yea, and he shall forecast his devices against the strong holds, even for a time. 25 And he shall stir up his power and his courage against the king of the south with a great army; and the king of the south shall be stirred up to battle with a very great and mighty army; but he shall not stand: for they shall forecast devices against him. 26 Yea, they that feed of the portion of his meat shall destroy him, and his army shall overflow: and many shall fall down slain. 27 And both these kings' hearts shall be to do mischief, and they shall speak lies at one table; but it shall not prosper: for yet the end shall be at the time appointed.
We are now less than 50 yrs. from the birth of Christ and we see one of the elements mentioned in the Bible which brought Joseph and Mary to Bethlehem, "a raiser of taxes". The raiser of taxes was Caesar Augustus who succeeded Julius as ruler over the Roman Empire. The age of Augustus was the height of the grandeur of the Roman Empire. Relative peace, luxury, law and order and greater education to the people were some of the marks of this age. (as the time approaches for the return of Jesus there will be a greater than ever push for taxes; I believe this will be a great mark of the government of the anti-Christ)
His "few days" (Agustus) lasted until 14 A.D. where he died in bed at the age of 75. There is belief by some that Augustus 4th wife Livia poisoned him that her son Tiberius might ascend to the position of ruler over Rome.
Tiberius was vile and wicked and was never honored by the Romans. With Tiberius came a renewal of warfare and he waged several successful campaigns in the areas of what is now Germany and also Armenia and Parthia. With the overflowing of those lands in victory also the "prince of the covenant" was "broken". This "prince of the covenant" was almost certainly Jesus Christ as it was during the reign of Tiberius Caesar that Jesus was crucified. Tiberius is mentioned in Luke 3:1 The league of verse 23 is probably the treaty between the Jews and the fledgling empire in or around 161 B.C. It was broken by 37 A.D. and Tiberius was dead at the hand of Marco, the praetorian prefect. Tiberius was alive when Jesus was crucified so it was he who had the rule over the Roman empire when the crucifixion took place.
We now come to the area which has strong foreshadowing of the coming anti-Christ. There is a league made with him it would seem by a "small people". The anti-Christ, it is believed, will make a league or covenant with Israel but it will be made with the intent to deceive and gain advantage with the people of Israel. Israel has always been few or small in number.
While the exact details of the battles the ant-Christ will fight (and win) cannot be discerned (by me at least) we can see in the narrative the utter defeat of the king of the south. As the king of the south stands for Egypt we can be sure that Egypt will play a large roll in the end time battles. It is interesting that at present we have new leadership in Egypt and they do not appear to be as friendly to Israel as Mubarak was.
In verse 25 we see the stirring up of Egypt is accomplished through deliberate means. Interesting also is the emphasis of forecasting devices against the king of the south in verses 24 and 25. I don't know what that would mean in ancient times but today we see it in missiles, propelled grenades, air attack and artillery barrages.. Verse 26 shows the demise of the king of the south was accomplished through treason instead of actual battle and I suspect that much of the opposition to the anti-Christ will be defeated by insurrection. Notice how the news today is full of people rising up in so called popular rebellions in the middle east. How may do you suppose are being led by people who were at one time loyal follower of the ones they want to overthrow. Someone is stirring up a lot of people in a lot of places and they are all Muslim. The ones who are filling the voids are even more radical than the ones being overthrown. Satan is setting the stage..
The final defeat of Egypt results in thousands slain and Egypt no longer is a threat to the king of the north. The anti-Christ will work on a much larger stage but the results will be the same. In verse 27 we see the players in the drama are both rotten to the core. Lies and deceit then and now. As so often is the case now so was it then. Evidently the king of the north and the king of the south met before the end "to work things out" but neither really wanted what they stated they wanted. Both would lie for gain. Treaties were worthless then and now. All of this gives us a glimpse of the world at it's worst. While the scope of the end time dealings of the anti-Christ will be on a much larger scale we can see history repeating itself.
I can imagine our present administration in America fitting right in with the scenario of the times up to the time of Christ and beyond with the collapse of the Roman empire. Lies and more lies. Truth being 180 degrees from that which is stated. Truly the stage is being set for the great deceiver and we are being shown shadows of the details in the Book of Daniel.
"Yet the end shall be at the time appointed. Even though the kings and leaders of the world think they are running things, we see that God is still in control in a seeminly out of control world. The statement is simply that the end will be at the time appointed. This thing will wind up God's way and in God's time and it will be to His honor and glory. Even so, Amen.
