CHAPTER 30
Genesis 30:1-6 And when Rachel saw that she bare Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister;and said unto Jacob, Give me children, or else I die. 2 And Jacob's anger was kindled against Rachel: and he said, Am I in God's stead, who hath withheld from thee the fruit of the womb? 3 And she said, Behold my maid Bilhah, go in unto her; and she shall bear upon my knees, that I may also have children by her. 4 And she gave him Bilhah her handmaid to wife: and Jacob went in unto her. 5 And Bilhah conceived, and bare Jacob a son. 6 And Rachel said, God hath judged me, and hath also heard my voice, and hath given me a son: therefore called she his name Dan.
Human nature and Satan are at it again. Rachel the beloved of Jacob is barren while her "usurper" sister is fertile. Rachel turns green at the thought of here sister being able to give Jacob sons while she can't. Lashing out she blames Jacob as if he was infertile. The proof that he was not at fault lies in the fact that Leah is bearing right and left. It is obvious that nothing is wrong with Jacob and when Rachel lashes out and blames him he shoots back: "Am I in God's stead"? This retort can also be taken to say "Am I God?!" Both know that only God has the power to open an unfertile womb and cause life to spring forth. If God could take the dried up womb of a 90 year old Sarah and bring it back to a youthful, childbearing condition He could certainly make Rachel's womb fruitful. Jacob's answer could rightly be understood then as "Don't blame me blame God."
Rachel now makes the same mistake as Sarah. She offers Jacob her handmaid as a proxy and Jacob as Abraham foolishly takes her up on it. The old adage "act in haste and repent in leisure" applies here. This is clearly not in God's will. You can see Satan's fingerprints all over this. The prophecy from the beginning concerned the coming "Seed" (Gen. 3:15) and Satan was doing his worst to make sure the prophecy not come to pass. If he could get all of the seed of the royal line to mess up then he reasoned that he could win out against God as there would be not seed fit to bruise the head of the serpent. Of course this all shows Satan's lack of knowledge of God's plan which was to not use any mortal man and descendant of Adam as the Royal Seed. The Royal Seed would come from God Himself.
The result of the union between Jacob and Bilhah is Dan. Notice that Rachel gives God the credit. The credit would better be given to the "god of this world". (2 Cor. 4:4) Dan means judge and his name plays in the prophecy pronounced by Jacob shortly before his death when he called his children around him and blessed them and prophesied of things to come concerning each of the tribes that sprang from his children. Look at the prophecy and think back to Genesis 3:14-15 and the prophecy of the bruised heel and bruised head. "Dan shall judge his people, as one of the tribes of Israel. 17 Dan shall be a serpent by the way, an adder in the path, that biteth the horse heels, so that his rider shall fall backward. " (Genesis 49:16-17) This could be a veiled reference to the anti-Christ as the tribe of Dan settled up near Syria as the northernmost tribe of Israel.
Samson was of the tribe of Dan and he judged his people (Judges 13) Samson, however, was not exactly what you would want as a role model for your children. This may be what Jacob was prophesying concerning Dan judging his people as one of the tribes of Israel. The tribe of Dan went whoring after false gods along with the tribe of Ephraim and set up the golden calves in Dan and in Samaria and (Judges 18:30, Hosea 8:5-6, Amos 8:14). The tribe of Dan caused many of the Israelites to stumble and fall because of it's idolatry. Because of Dan's departure from the God of Israel the tribe of Dan is not listed as one of the tribes that is sealed in the Book of Revelation. The list in Revelation 7 is Juda, Reuben, Gad, Aser, Nepthalim, Manasses, Simeon, Levi. Issachar, Zabulon, Joseph and Benjamin. Ephraim is also omitted in the list in Revelation and for basically the same reasons.
Sarah and Abraham's "helping God" resulted in the Arab nations and now we see Rachel's impatience resulted in an idol worshipping tribe (along with Ephraim) which was largely responsible for the 10 norther tribes going into captivity to Syria.
