Genesis 30:22-24 And God remembered Rachel, and God hearkened to her, and opened her womb. 23 And she conceived, and bare a son; and said, God hath taken away my reproach: 24 And she called his name Joseph; and said, The LORD shall add to me another son.
Just as God remember Hannah (1 Sam. chapter 1) and Sarah (Gen. 21:1-2) He now "remembers" Rachel. Notice He "hearkened to her". Rachel has been pleading with God for a long time and not very patiently or she would not have given her handmaid to Jacob. God's admonition in matters of prayer are two fold. Luke 11:9-10 And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. 10 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. Psalm 27:14 Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.
Pray and wait! Hard to do isn't it. The modern saying is "Lord, teach me patience but please hurry! We aren't told how long Rachel waited for her longed for pregnancy but it was several years. Her emotions ranged from jealousy to disappointment to anger and depression. There is no telling how much time she spent making her petition to God. More than likely God had shut her womb because of her attitude to her sister Leah. There may have been much rivalry between Rachel and Leah even before Jacob showed up but what ever the case God did not honor her with a child and Rachel in her heart knew that God's reproach had fallen on her.
The long awaited day arrives and one of the greatest men of the Bible shows up and he is named Joseph. The name Joseph means "Jehovah has added". Joseph becomes one of the greatest types of Jesus Christ found in the Old Testament. The events of his life foreshadow events in the life of Christ in well over a hundred particulars. Joseph, the firstborn of Rachel, will be a deliverer of the people of God. He will deliver them in a time of trouble and he will feed them. He will be betrayed by his brethren and he will be betrayed for silver. He will be robed in clothes of royalty and be stripped of them and robed in the clothing of a slave and servant. These are only a few of the details of this persons life that foreshadow events in the life of Christ.
Rachel ends this passage with a prophecy: "The LORD shall add to me another son". The other son will be Benjamin and he will be the forefather of the Apostle Paul. Truly, although this woman had to wait on the Lord, the wait was worth it.
