THE 70 WEEKS

(Due to the extent of the revelations in this passage there will be more than one post on this passage)

Daniel 9:20-27 And whiles I was speaking, and praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before the LORD my God for the holy mountain of my God; 21 Yea, whiles I was speaking in prayer, even the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening oblation. 22 And he informed me, and talked with me, and said, O Daniel, I am now come forth to give thee skill and understanding. 23 At the beginning of thy supplications the commandment came forth, and I am come to shew thee; for thou art greatly beloved: therefore understand the matter, and consider the vision. 24 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy. 25 Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. 26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. 27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.
.
There is probably not another prophecy in the Bible that elicits more interest than the prophecy of the seventy weeks that God has determined on the nation Israel. Notice that I said has instead of had because this prophecy has not run it's full course. We should remember the great prayer of repentance and supplication for Israel and Jerusalem that Daniel had prayed prior to the verses cited above. Daniel was a special person to God. More so than many of the other prophets that God had chosen down through time. Daniel was a person completely sold out to God. He probably spent more time in ardent and fervent prayer than any of the others.

There are three people that stand out as extraordinary in the eyes of God when it comes to being overcomers. You will find these three named together in the Book of Ezekiel. Ezekiel 14:13-14,20 Son of man, when the land sinneth against me by trespassing grievously, then will I stretch out mine hand upon it, and will break the staff of the bread thereof, and will send famine upon it, and will cut off man and beast from it: 14 Though these three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, they should deliver but their own souls by their righteousness, saith the Lord GOD. 20 Though Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, as I live, saith the Lord GOD, they shall deliver neither son nor daughter; they shall but deliver their own souls by their righteousness.

The context of the above passage is the wrath of God poured on Israel for their transgressions. Each of these three men experienced troubles that were types of the coming tribulation. Each overcame in a special sense.

Noah overcame the world. He overcame the pressures of a world mocking while he preached and built the ark for 120 years. He preached that the rain and floods were coming and they just mocked and laughed. He never wavered nor backed up on God.

Daniel overcame the flesh. From a youth he went into captivity and could have used the excuse that he had to obey his masters in matters that would have been contrary to God. He never would. For probably at least 70 years he held true under the Babylonian captivity and then the Persian captivity. He could have had wealth and power to satisfy fleshly desires but he would not.

Job overcame the devil. Satan vied with God for Job's soul. God allowed Satan to hit Job with everything he had yet Job would not break nor bow to this evil being. He would not curse God and die even when his wife taunted him to do so. Whenever we think we have troubles we would do well to look at real overcomers who loved God more than sin for a season. They wouldn't let lust nor fear guide their lives.
In verse 20 as we study this passage in Daniel notice that Daniel is still in prayer. I believe he has prayed all day and is entering into the evening prayer time as Gabriel comes to him with the words of this prophecy. The scripture says while he was still speaking to God in prayer "the man Gabriel" shows up and touches him. The angel Gabriel comes to him as a man and not in his actual form of angel. Angels appear mostly as men and if they don't reveal themselves you will never know you are in the presence of an angel. Nearly all the paintings you see of angels show a magnificent winged man or woman with light about them or radiating from them. This is not biblical. You will never find an angel coming to man in any other form than as a man. He may have a brightness and aura about him but he is never shown as a winged being. We were created in the image and likeness of the Father and evidently the angels were also. The gender is always masculine. There are no female angels and you will not find an angel with wings in the Bible. In Genesis 6 they show up as men. In Genesis 18:2 it was 3 men yet one was God! When Mary went to the sepulchre and saw the two angels she did not know they were angels and when she met Jesus she thought He was the gardener. (John 20:11-15) So Gabriel comes to Daniel in the form of a man.
The name Gabriel mean "Warrior" or "strong man of God". Most place him as an archangel but the scriptures do not say he is an archangel. The only 4 reference to Gabriel are found in Daniel 8:16 and Daniel 9:21. He shows up in Luke 1:19 and 1:26. In Luke 1:19 he appears to Zacharias the father of John the Baptist and strikes him dumb for his unbelief. In Luke 1:19 Gabriel announces to Zacharias that "I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God;". To stand in the presence of God is a very high honor for an angel so we know that in rank Gabriel is one of the highest. Gabriel was the angel that heralded both John the Baptist and also Emmanuel. "God with us"! It was to Mary that God sent him and he announced to her she was the one chosen of God to give birth to His only begotten Son.

There is one other special in rank angel in the Bible that is mentioned by name and this is Michael. Then name Michael means "who is like God". In Daniel 10:13 he is described as "one of the chief princes" In Daniel 10:21 the one speaking to Daniel calls him "your prince". (the use of the word prince here has significance for what follows in this prophecy we are studying) In Daniel 12:1 it is prophesied that Michael will show up in the time of the greatest trouble since there was a nation. The promise is also in 12:1 that every Jew will be delivered that is found written in the book. The time prophesied is the "Great Tribulation" and consequently Michael shows up in the Book of Revelation in chapter 12:7. There he is shown fighting with and defeating Satan and his angels.. The Book of Daniel goes hand in hand with the Book of Revelation. In deed much of Revelation could rightly be said to be the Book of Daniel revealed.
