Daniels 70 weeks part 2
As we saw in the last study Daniel was praying when the angel Gabriel stood before him and said: "----, O Daniel, I am now come forth to give thee skill and understanding. " Daniel's prayer had been a prayer of repentance for himself and Israel. He had been reading in the scriptures as we saw when we started the study of this chapter. He realized the 70 year punishment in captivity to Babylon was almost ended and therefore prayed to God to fulfill His promise to end the punishment. Some scriptures I cited at that time figure in to this prophecy in a hidden way. Let's take another look : 2 Chronicles 36:21 To fulfil the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed her sabbaths: for as long as she lay desolate she kept sabbath, to fulfil threescore and ten years. Jeremiah 25:11 And this whole land shall be a desolation, and an astonishment; and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years. Jeremiah 29:10 For thus saith the LORD, That after seventy years be accomplished at Babylon I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place.
Notice in 1 Chron. 36:21 the punishment is tied to sabbaths of the land. A sabbath is literally every seventh day or every seventh year. The pattern was set in the creation where God created the heavens, earth and all therein in 6 days and rested the 7th. The word sabbath itself comes from the Hebrew "shabath" which mens; "cease, desist, rest". We see then the while word means to rest God set the time frame for that rest. Not only did God command that His people rest on the 7th day but he also commanded His people to let the land rest or enjoy a sabbath every seven years. In the Book of Leviticus we are given the details of this: Leviticus 25:2-13 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye come into the land which I give you, then shall the land keep a sabbath unto the LORD. 3 Six years thou shalt sow thy field, and six years thou shalt prune thy vineyard, and gather in the fruit thereof; 4 But in the seventh year shall be a sabbath of rest unto the land, a sabbath for the LORD: thou shalt neither sow thy field, nor prune thy vineyard. 5 That which groweth of its own accord of thy harvest thou shalt not reap, neither gather the grapes of thy vine undressed: for it is a year of rest unto the land. 6 And the sabbath of the land shall be meat for you; for thee, and for thy servant, and for thy maid, and for thy hired servant, and for thy stranger that sojourneth with thee, 7 And for thy cattle, and for the beast that are in thy land, shall all the increase thereof be meat. 8 And thou shalt number seven sabbaths of years unto thee, seven times seven years; and the space of the seven sabbaths of years shall be unto thee forty and nine years. 9 Then shalt thou cause the trumpet of the jubile to sound on the tenth day of the seventh month, in the day of atonement shall ye make the trumpet sound throughout all your land. 10 And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof: it shall be a jubile unto you; and ye shall return every man unto his possession, and ye shall return every man unto his family. 11 A jubile shall that fiftieth year be unto you: ye shall not sow, neither reap that which groweth of itself in it, nor gather the grapes in it of thy vine undressed. 12 For it is the jubile; it shall be holy unto you: ye shall eat the increase thereof out of the field. 13 In the year of this jubile ye shall return every man unto his possession.
Six years and let the land rest. Do this 7 times and there is a special rest where liberty is proclaimed. 7 X 7 is 49 and then jubilee. The Children of Israel had let 70 X 7 sabbaths pass without obeying God's command and letting the land rest. God punished them 1 year for every sabbath that had been missed. No we will see where this ties in to the upcoming prophecy. 70 X 7 = 490. We will need to keep this number in mind.
We will now return to the words of Gabriel to Daniel in verse 24 of this chapter: "Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy."
We can readily see that if we count up a literal 70 weeks we have a mess. A literal week is 7 days. 70 weeks of 7 days each equals to 490 days. According to Gabriel by the end of this time period of 490 "days" transgression will be finished, sin will be ended, reconciliation for iniquity would be taken care of, everlasting righteousness would be brought in and with the anointing of the most Holy the visions and prophecies would be complete or "sealed up". If the length of time is counted as literal the time period to do all this would be a little over a year and 4 months. It did not come to pass in Daniel's day. What then is the key to understanding. We have already read the key in 2 Chron. If 70 sabbaths had to be fulfilled and they were to be in captivity 70 years then God punished them 1 year for each missed sabbath. The key is then 1 year equals a day in this prophecy Gabriel is giving to Daniel. The 70 weeks were to be 70 weeks of years which would then add to 490 years and as we shall see in the next study this is exactly how it is playing out. We will see that 69 weeks have played out to the day and there is 1 week of years yet to be fulfilled.
One thing as a side note before closing this study. Look at these verses and the connection to our study: Matthew 18:21-22 Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? 22 Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.
If we apply the principle as God set forth from the beginning we see the play on words that our Lord has brought into His answer to Peter. While Peter is searching for the limit on forgiveness which we will liken as being a week, ending with the sabbath, Jesus takes the infinite view and tells Peter in essence: "You keep forgiving until the 490 weeks are over". It is only then that we will have reached the sinless kingdom and forgiveness will no longer be needed.
