CHAPTER 5

Daniel 5:1-6 Belshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of his lords, and drank wine before the thousand. 2 Belshazzar, whiles he tasted the wine, commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels which his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem; that the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, might drink therein. 3 Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of the house of God which was at Jerusalem; and the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, drank in them. 4 They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone. 5 In the same hour came forth fingers of a man's hand, and wrote over against the candlestick upon the plaister of the wall of the king's palace: and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote. 6 Then the king's countenance was changed, and his thoughts troubled him, so that the joints of his loins were loosed, and his knees smote one against another.

Many times arrogance knows no bounds. It is also true that tempting God with that arrogance will have it's payday. Belshazzar stands out as an object lesson for those who would mock God or make a mockery of things consecrated to God for worship and service. Belshazzar, who was probably the grandson of Nebuchadnezzar, took the vessels that were used in the Temple worship in Jerusalem by the Jews and made them common drinking vessels although he knew the history and importance of those vessels in the worship to Jehovah of the Jews.

It was not enough for him to desecrate holy things but he also, in his drunken partying praised man made idols ignoring the recent history of Nebuchadnezzar and God's judgment on him.. Nebuchadnezzar had learned his lesson the hard way and Belshazzar refused to be moved by what had happened to his grandfather to humble him.

You can well imagine how quickly Belshazzar sobered when suddenly the fingers of a man's hand appeared from nowhere and began writing on the wall in the palace. The reaction of Belshazzar to this mysterious sight reveals the inner thoughts of Belshazzar. His heart was already convicting him of his stupidity. Rather than admit his error and the foolishness of his actions he mocked God by worshipping idols while drinking from consecrated vessels. Belshazzar was struck with such fear that his knees actually knocked against each other in uncontrollable shaking.

God, through His Word, warns us that there is a "sin unto death". John was given this knowledge to pass along to others as a warning: 1 John 5:16-17 If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it. 17 All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death. Ananias and Sapphira found this out in Acts 5:1-10. Uzza experienced it in 1 Chron. 13:9-10. Herod committed his sin unto death in Acts 12:23. The only thing that saved Balaam's neck was the donkey he was riding on.(Num. 22:21-33) The entire world reached the limit of God's patience in Genesis 6 and will do so again (if we have not already reached it) in the time just before the great tribulation.

There is a line that God will allow us to walk up to but if we cross that line we better be ready to explain ourselves to God face to face as that is where we will wind up. The graveyards of the world are full of the bodies of those who tried to push their luck past what God was willing to allow. Belshazzar was about to find out that he had crossed that line.

The lesson in this compares well to what is written
in Psalm 44:
20 If we have forgotten the name of our
God, or stretched out our hands
to a strange god; 21 Shall not God
search this out? for he knoweth the
secrets of the heart.

Belshazzar stretched his hand
out to the wrong god-- and God in
return stretched out His Hand right in front
of him -the power of His hand can not be denied
nor can those who rebel against God escape from
His rule.

1 Peter 5: 6 Humble yourselves therefore
under the mighty hand of God,
that he may exalt you in due time.

God bless you always and thanks for sharing another
important lesson found in this part of Daniel.
