Daniel 5:13-17 Then was Daniel brought in before the king. And the king spake and said unto Daniel, Art thou that Daniel, which art of the children of the captivity of Judah, whom the king my father brought out of Jewry? 14 I have even heard of thee, that the spirit of the gods is in thee, and that light and understanding and excellent wisdom is found in thee. 15 And now the wise men, the astrologers, have been brought in before me, that they should read this writing, and make known unto me the interpretation thereof: but they could not shew the interpretation of the thing: 16 And I have heard of thee, that thou canst make interpretations, and dissolve doubts: now if thou canst read the writing, and make known to me the interpretation thereof, thou shalt be clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about thy neck, and shalt be the third ruler in the kingdom. 17 Then Daniel answered and said before the king, Let thy gifts be to thyself, and give thy rewards to another; yet I will read the writing unto the king, and make known to him the interpretation.
The king has run out of options and at the last he takes the advice of the queen (possibly his mother or grandmother) and calls for Daniel. Belshazzar, as Nebuchadnezzar before him, tried every other option before turning to the man of God. Isn't this the way it is today so many times? A person in trouble will turn to God as a last resort when all else has failed but seldom will God be his first choice. It is when the doctor has told you there is no hope that you will get serious with God. A person caught up in a crime will often "get religion" but just as sure as God delivers too often fulfill 2 Peter 2:22 will be fulfilled: "But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire."
Belshazzar knew of the den of lions and he knew of the furnace of fire. He could not help but know of the conversion of Nebuchadnezzar after living off of "pasture salad" with the cows for 7 years. In desperation the king calls on Daniel and Daniel enters into the presence of Belshazzar. "Art thou THAT Daniel?" I imagine this is close to the way the king addressed Daniel. Nebuchadnezzar would attempt to build up Daniel to work on his ego. This is the way of politicians. Smile and drip honey and butter. Drool at the prospects of being in the company of such notoriety. "I have even heard of thee"! "You bet your sweet bippy" (Laugh In phrase-70's era) he had heard of Daniel and the queen had only had to remind him of what he already knew. The gist of the rest of the conversation is this. Danny boy. If you will read the writing to me and make known the meaning I will make it worth your while. Dan ol' buddy I will dress you as a king in scarlet attire. I will drape a solid gold chain around your neck and just to sweeten the pot how would you like to be the third ruler in the kingdom! All yours just for reading and interpreting that writing yonder on the wall.
