I loved the beach at Sougia. It is pebbly and shelves steeply into the water, so not good for nervous swimmers. Friendly crowd, and very busy when we were there (June/July)
There is a lovely sandy, gently shevling beach at Paleochora, a literal 10 minute walk from the town centre. Sunbeds and unbrellas for hire, and an excellent taverna at the end of the beach (dress first).
Enjoy the island, and don't pass up the opportunity to go to Spinalonga (of 'The Island' by Victoria Hislop fame)
