Subject: august 2000 explosion in the sky

On either August 13 or 14 of 2000 I witnessed what looked like an explosion in the North/NE sky over Ft. Wayne, Indiana. The "explosion" was white and a part of it shot off from the main body. The light slowly faded away and completely dissapeared in about one minute. There was another witness with me, so I know I was not seeing things. Anyone know what it may have been?
