In reply to: Dave 's message, "Minor Scales" on 15:16:18 06/07/02 Fri

alrighty, I'll try to explain this as simple as possible

there are three types of minor scales, and I'll try to explain them all

First though I will explain how to find the key signature well as you know F major has 1 flat, Bb has 2 flats and so on.. well to find the minor key you go down 3 SEMITONES so d minor would have 1 flat... you would go E - Eb - D and that's how you find the key signature. To find the Major key off of the minor, you go UP 3 semitones.. so if you had a minor and wanted to find out what was in the key signature you go up three Bb - B - C so it would be C major, which has no sharps or flats... understand?

Next the three types you probably need to know...

Natural Minor- this is using the minor key signature and not changing anything... i.e. d minor has one flat and the scale starts on d

Harmonic Minor- using the minor key signature BUT RASING the 7th note (leading tone)asending (going up)and desending(going down)... i.e. d minor has one flat (Bb) but c is sharp on the way up and down and the scale starts on d

Melodic Minor- using the minor key signature BUT RASING the 6th (sudmediant) and 7th (leading tone) asending (going up) BUT LOWERING the 6th (sudmediant) and 7th (leading tone) desending (going down).. i.e. d minor has one flat (Bb) but B is natural and C is sharp on the way up and on the way down B is flat and C is natural and the scale starts on d

WHEW!!! If you need anymore help or anything.. I am here and if you need them written out or anything I'd be glad to help...
Hope this helps Dave!!!
