The torso can be shortened or narrowed with seam lines, belts, bows, and collars. A short necklace can shorten your neck. A scarf or belt that hangs down toward the legs will make the legs appear longer. Knitted texture, lace, floras, prints, and plaids can assist in creating an illusion. Thicker vertical lines in plaids lengthens and slims. Wear a larger print where you want people to look and smaller print where you do not want them to look. An all over print can camouflage figure problems, but prints here and there can create a fuller you. Prints around the neck and over the shoulder can make your shoulders appear wider. Just wear prints near the parts of your figure's assets, because they are usually more eye catching than a solid color. When buying pants be sure they fit well. Defects are emphasized in a pair of pants that may go unnoticed in a skirt. Petite women. Petite women need to keep clothes in line, slim narrow belts. A slight contrast in colors and fitted lines will flatter you endlessly. Also stay with fabrics that are soft and flowing that fits well. Don't skip breakfast. You will lose weight more quickly if you have a bite to eat in the morning. Drink hot water with lemon Eat hot meals rather than cold. Your metabolism speeds up very slightly when you eat and again if the food is hot. Do at least thirty minutes of cardiovascular exercise, five days a week. This will condition you to burn fat more efficiently. Don't deprive your body of carbohydrates, no matter what they say.
You need carbs for energy and will feel terrible without them. Wear a pedometer and see that you take 1,000 steps every day. If you have a sit-down job, get up every hour and walk around for five minutes or so. Dedicate two hours a week to weight training, concentrating on the larger muscles. Congratulations!
We are excited that you have chosen to participate in our 2009 Outstanding Teen & Preteen Pageant to be held Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009.

The purpose of the Teen & Preteen Program is to familiarize young women with the Miss Virginia/ Miss America Organization and to provide an opportunity for young ladies to win scholarships, develop poise, confidence, stage presence, enhance interview skills, and offer opportunities for public appearances while serving their community. Our teen and preteen winners will represent “Miss Piedmont Region” during community service events and appearances locally and advance to “Miss Virginia’s Outstanding Teen & Preteen Pageant” in Roanoke, VA, June 23-27 of 2009.

All finalists will receive plaques but the winners of our program will receive…
• Entry Fee to the Miss Virginia’s Outstanding Teen & Pre-Teen Pageant (if 4 contestants compete in
the preliminary, otherwise prorated to attendance).
• Official Crown
• Sash
• Other Prizes

Requirements to Enter:

Outstanding Teen:
• Ages 13-17 (must still be a junior in high school)
• United States Citizen
• Reside in Virginia for a minimum of 6 months
• Good health
• Meet time and responsibility commitments set forth by the director
• Winner required to compete in Miss Virginia’s Outstanding Teen Pageant in June in Roanoke, VA and participate in any of our MISS preliminaries

Outstanding Pre-Teen:
• Ages 10-12
• United States citizen
• Reside in Virginia for a minimum of 6 months
• Good health
• Meet time and responsibility commitments set forth by the director
• Winner required to compete in Miss Virginia’s Outstanding Preteen Pageant in June in Roanoke, VA and participate in any of our MISS preliminaries

Schedule of Events for Preteen & Teen Pageant
Pageant Rehearsal: Jan. 16, 2009 at 6:30pm –
Virginia Farm Bureau Headquarters
12580 West Creek Parkway
Richmond, VA 23238
(Location is in Goochland County.)
Pageant: Jan. 17, 2009 – 6:30 p.m.
Pageant Interviews: TBA Please Check in 15 min from you appointed time (Will be Jan. 17 in the morning.)

*Please be flexible. Times may change if number of contestants dictates time adjustment.

Categories of competition and wardrobe requirements
(All wardrobe will be approved by director prior to competition.)

(Each area of competition is scored on a scale of 1-10 and each is valued at 25% of their 100% score)
• INTERVIEW: (Preteen: 5 minutes / Teen: 5 minutes) No opening introduction statements will be necessary. Please wear a Sunday dress, skirted suit or a pants suit. This is a personal interview with a 5 member panel of judges. Preteens will sit in a chair and Teens will stand (a podium will be supplied).
• TALENT: (2 minute maximum) appropriate costume or attire for stage presentation. A contestant may choose to replace a “performance” talent with the writing and reading of an essay. The essay should be on an important issue to the contestant.
• LIFESTYLE & PHYSICAL FITNESS: Wear physical fitness outfit of your choice (i.e. sports uniforms, dance wear, etc. NO SWIMSUITS!!!)
• GOWN & ON-STAGE INTERVIEW: Dresses may be long or short (please be sure they are age appropriate).

* OPENING NUMBER is not scored but it is an important part of the competition. Attire for this portion of the pageant has not been determined. We will send out information on this at a later date.

Application Procedure
To register...
 Complete contestant application/fact sheet along with the $50 registration fee (This fee is NON-REFUNDABLE—this acts as the deposit); envelope must be postmarked by December 7. Please make checks payable to Miss Piedmont Region Scholarship Program. Contact information on the application. Please send to the Teen and Pre-Teen director.
 The remainder of the registration fee $100 is due by Jan. 3, and checks should be payable to Miss Piedmont Region Scholarship Program. Please send to the Teen and Pre-Teen director.

Additional Application Information Deadlines-

 Headshots --2 prints Black & White preferred; Hard copy, on disk, or e-mailed as an attachment in a minimum of 300dpi. All photographs should accompany this preliminary application and will be returned to the contestants after interviews. Due Dec. 15.
 If you decide to participate in the Miss Photogenic Competition add $25 to your total as well as label the picture you wish to have judged- MISS PHOTOGENIC COMPETITION.
 Copy of the contestant’s birth certificate or passport as proof of residency and age.
 CD and/ or Talent information
 AD requirement – Each contestant is asked to sell at least $100 in program ad space. Sponsors are the main support of our pageant. Admissions, unfortunately, pay only a very small part of the expenses of the pageant. You may make as many copies of the ad contract forms as needed. We will give an award for the most ads sold by a contestant at the finals. Ads should be camera ready. If you need assistance with creating an AD let us know. Ad designs, and payment are all due by Dec. 15. No exceptions.
 Sponsors – Each contestant can help us grow by finding sponsors to help us with growing the scholarships and the program. This is not required, but will help Miss Piedmont Region fulfill our mission. We will give an award for the most sponsorship money raised for Miss Piedmont Region at the finals. All sponsor information and payments are all due by Dec. 15. No exceptions.

Shake your Body!
Every day find new ways to move your body. Use the stairs rather than an escalator or elevator. Walk your dog (or a neighbours' dog if you don't have one!) , chase your kids, play ball with friends, mow the lawn. Anything that moves your limbs is not only a fitness tool, it's a stress buster. Think 'move' in small increments of time. It doesn't have to be an hour in the gym or a 45-minute cardiovascular class or body pump or kickboxing. Move more and feel better!
Cut the Fat
Don't eat the obvious fat in your diet such as fried foods, burgers and other fatty meats. Eat dairy products like cheese, cottage cheese, milk and cream low fat versions. Nuts and sandwich meats, mayonnaise, margarine, butter and sauces should be eaten in limited amounts and even then in their low fat verions. Most are available in lower fat versions.
Reduce Stress
Stress busters come in many forms. Some techniques recommended by experts are to think positive thoughts. Spend 30 minutes a day doing something you like. (i.e., go back to number one above!, exercise is a great stress reducer, Soak in a hot tub; walk on the beach or in a park; read a good book; visit a friend; play with your dog; listen to soothing music; watch a funny movie. Get a massage, a facial or a haircut. Meditate. Count to ten before losing your temper or getting aggravated. Avoid difficult people when possible. Stop Smoking
All the experts agree on this one. Ever since 1960 when it was announced that smoking was harmful to your health, people have been reducing their use of tobacco products. Just recently, we've seen a surge in smoking in adolescents and teens. Warn your children of the false romance or 'tough guy' image of smokers. Find ways to quit smoking hypnosis, support groups and even prescription medicine such as Zyban is available to help you.
Reduce your exposure to Pollution
Not everyone can live in a smog-free environment, but we can all avoid smoke-filled rooms, high traffic areas, breathing in highway fumes and exercising near busy thoroughfares. Exercise outside when the smog rating is low. Exercise indoors in air conditioning where air quality is good. Plant lots of shrubbery in your yard. It's a good pollution deterrent. If you ride a bicycle in traffic, where a small pollution mask over your mouth and nose.

Statistics show that the wearing of seat belts add to longevity and help alleviate potential injuries in car crashes.
Floss Your Teeth
Harvard Medical School studied longevity and found one of the most important contributing factors was daily flossing! Flossing and brushing your teeth daily can make your RealAge as much as 6.4 years younger. These studies make a direct connection between longevity and teeth flossing. Nobody knows exactly why. Perhaps it's because people who floss tend to be more health conscious than people who don't?
Maintain a Positive Mental Outlook
There's a definitive connection between living well and healthily and having a cheerful outlook on life. Yes, keep on smiling and laughing!

The link between genetics and health is a powerful one. You can't pick your parents, but just because one or both of your parents died young in ill health doesn't mean you can't counteract the genetic pool handed you.
