As I stated before, incentives can be found in all areas of the real world. For example, do you belong to a video store club, or do you purchase your dog/cat food from Petco where after purchasing so many videos or so many bags of food you are rewarded with a freebie.
This is comparing apples to oranges. What we don't want to happen is children only reading to achieve these levels or awards. When there is no prize/reward/bribe (use whichever word you'd like, they are the same in this instance), is there motivation to read? Shouldn't children want to read without an incentive?
In some classes, kids are required to participate in the AR program. If it's part of your child's grade, there is definitely no choice to opt out, as you suggest.
The AR program can work without incentives. What's next? A pizza party for those students who pass their Terra Novas?
