Flooding hits low-lying spots
Thousands lose power in Seattle, suburban areas, Kitsap County

SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER STAFF

Heavy rain and melting snow swelled streams, causing floods in low-lying areas yesterday, with officials posting warnings of more problems amid hopes that the rain and flood danger will ease today.

While the rain caused flooding, winds were playing havoc with electrical power, sending tree limbs onto power lines and shutting off the lights in 7,300 homes and businesses in North Seattle, Shoreline, Kent, Des Moines and Kitsap County.

About 4,300 of the darkened homes and businesses were in an area extending from North 109th Street in Seattle to North 165th Street in Shoreline, along Linden Avenue North and as far west as Puget Sound, including parts of the Broadview and Bitter Lake neighborhoods. Power had been restored to about 2,700 by 11 p.m.

Limbs also knocked out power to about 1,000 customers along the Kent-Des Moines border about 6:30 p.m. Crews restored that power by 10 p.m., but by then the power company in Kitsap County had 2,000 customers in the dark, mostly in the Poulsbo area.
