well im afraid the same thing does happen to me
but it would seem likely that unarmed may be needed
possibly craft skills involving weapons or else maybe it is the weapon evaluating skills as these show an understanding of weapons so maybe they would show a knowledge in their repair maybe?
worth a try for say warriors with high judging skills and such if they could try and if succcesul give there bonuses - as well as those who can't so that we could see how much is required?
just a thought
