The original quest was to give the book to the sphinx and he asks you a riddle, and then when you answer it you get out. Unfortunately, I can't find any site any more that has the complete riddle answer set.

First you give the monocle to the sphinx so he can read, then you give him the book-- you might try pryiong open the book with a bone or one of the swords of guaranteed sphinx killings that you find laying on the ground.
