Well, they assign the mystery weights a number between 1/8(the smallest weight) and the maximum of like 27(all 5 weights on one pan combined)

Sometiems you have to move a weight on to the pan with the mystery weight to get it done too. It's probably one of the most random anqd difficult of the DiscWorld quests, given that all variables in it are completely chaotic
