It's normal to sometimes have currents near the shipwreck though most times they are quite mild. They usually flow from west to east, pushing snorkellers away from the jetty towards the wreck. I mentioned this in the Snorkelling section of my main site (www.redang.org/snorkel.htm), asking snorkellers to be wary of currents when swimming out to the wreck. The currents get stronger the further out (closer to the marker buoys) you go. At times when the current is stronger, you can feel yourself drifting away from the jetty when you try to float in one place - during these times it's best not to visit the wreck. If you happen to get caught, just swim diagonally toward shore away from the wreck when that happens, you'll hit the beach eventually. If you try to swim back to the stairs at the jetty directly against the current, it can be pretty tiring (even with fins).

Rgds,
Alex.
