Subject: What to wear for short-sighted people when snorkelling

Hey guys,

I am going to Redang in Aug. But most of my friends and i are short sighted. We are told that our package has included snorkelling equipment. But for short sighted people, do they have special masks there? We have booked redang bay. If possible, can we use the normal swimming goggles(which we usually use in swimming pools, just like the sportsman use)? If so we can take our own goggles which are for short-sighted.

Thanks!

Yes, you can use the powered googles but you will have to keep getting air to continue snorkelling. The mask offers bigger view. I know this because I have done it with regular googles and mask. I prefer the mask. I don't have to keep surfacing to get air, it okay though just more convenient and easier to just breathe with the snorkel.

There should be powered mask, this is most likely not part of your equipment, you have to rent them for about 20 riggit. That is the going rate for most resort operators. Best to call them direct and ask for specific info like how much is the degree that you require for your short-sightedness.

Have fun, our group had one guy with glasses and he wore contacts with mask and he tried powered mask as well, both instances he fun looking at the fishes.

Thanks for the information

Why can't i use normal goggle and at the same time breathe with the snorkel? I guess the goggle/mask is seperate from the snorkel.

Seems I have three choices
1. Wear normal goggle that have short-sighted lense
2. Wear contact and normal mask
3. Wear powered mask that have short-sighted lense

Masks provide better view than goggle£¬ am i right?

Yes, you are right. There are only three choices for most of us.

The other options: the Orang Laut (Sea people) actually dive with no mask and snorkel and was able to demostrate to us the ability to see and pick things from the sea bed. Not for us folks though :)

Mask would be the best option. The exception happens when there is mismatch between face and mask, then water will seep in. This is where googles, personal ones esp., will be the better choice the mask.

Otherwise, go with the mask and follow guidelines (from the numerous websites) on selecting the proper mask with or without lenses. It give a whole new view underwater :)

Good luck and have fun.
