Hey Alex,
Just came back from Redang yesterday. Met you there as well. I was one of the guys who came to enquire at the dive shop.
I think the management as a whole should advise visitors not to step on the corals. There were no indications, no signs warning/educating the visitors not to do this. It should be part of the briefing when guests arrive at the resort.
I spent some time snorkelling at Shark Bay, not far from Pasir Panjang. It was a delightful experience but I saw lots of broken corals and people stepping, unknowingly, on them. I even witnessed the atrocity of the guests catching fish in plastic bags! There were also some people who packed bread in the plastic bags to feed the fish but they left the bags it in the sea! This has got to stop if Shark Bay is going to stay as it is. Although I stayed in Laguna Resort, I'm certain that that this is not purely the responsility of the resort as there are many along Pasir Panjang.
There should be an air of conservation about the place, which is lacking. Maybe some educational trips can be arranged by the resorts to make it an experience to remember. Tracking around the area for example with a guide to explain the variety of flora/fauna/marine life would be great. I believe if everyone knew how long it takes coral to grow, we would be more careful about where we step on.

I left Redang yesterday with a hope that I can return to see the baby sharks and the marine life again. Hope they won't go away.

Sean.

Palau Redang is definitely overcommericalized this year, the biggest motivator is the draw of the dollar. Money talks, everything else second to that. Sad but true.

They, all resorts and boat operators, could and should conduct a briefing to all new and old visitors. Those rusty old Marine Park Rules and Regulations signs won't do anymore. The run-of-the-mill visitors just want to have a good time and not think about the corals, marine or fuana. Sad but true.

Catching the fishes and leaving the plastic bags ... ~!@#$%^&*!

These folks just don't get it, they think it is a place away from home and therefore not their responsibility.... ahyah.
