Subject: lapping people

ok, if you were in a race that had no competition for you, and you were running pretty slowly, and you we're catching up to a guy that you could lap on the final straight and this guy starts sprinting so that you don't lap him, what would you do?
would you continue "kicking" (your running slow, remember) and go by the guy, or would you ease up since you are well ahead of 2nd and allow the guy the dignity of not getting lapped?

just curious.
