Ian Clarke went to Cal Berkley. As a freshman Ian set the Freshman Pac 10 cross country record that was held by Henry Rono. Ian was sidelined for much of his career due to a relaspe in an injury that he fell victim to just before his anticipated world cross country victory. Ian was 5th place the year before falling into a groundhog hole a few weeks before the worlds. Ian had run 8.04 as a 17 year old and was an even better cross runner. Ian Clarke had won OFSAA, OTFA's and the Trials race over Dennis Starke who went on to finish 4th the year Ian was injured. What a shame as this fall not only prevented him from the potential GOld medel but also an even greater career. Both Ian and Dennis were Coached by Brian Barnes who in my opinion was and still is the greatest Jr coach in Canadian history. Other athletes coached by Ian Clarke:

Ian Clarke 8.04, 5th at World Cross
Dennis Starke 4th at world cross
Dave Peckham 12th at world cross
Mike Dixon 21st at world cross

Greg Duhaime 8.19 steeple (5th ranked in the world)
Vern Iwancin 8.34 steeple
Marc Adam 8.35 steeple
This is 3 in the top 11 !!!

I have missed many many great coaching performances that Brian Barnes has created. This is a man that is still quite capable of creating champions. He lives in Brampton Ontario
and will dominate again if approached.

By the way, the Georgetown team that we are talking about here was coached at school by Karen Cosegrove and Donna Metcalfe. Brian Barnes was the man behind the total dominace they once had.
