In reply to: gator 's message, "Tenn Gator" on 14:50:55 09/21/05 Wed

Let me tell you the true tale of a small town and a Louisiana family...

I called Gator on the Saturday before the storm...and begged her to get her family to Tennessee...but oh no...she couldn't do that...She was going to ride that storm out...they would be fine...

Things weren't so fine...and only Gator and her family can tell you how bad things were...but finally...on the Friday after the storm I get a phone call from her...I was in the concession stand at the football game...and she asked if I was serious about them coming to Tennessee...I said yes...

She told me about some of the things they were going through...no electricity, no phone, food running out and the stores not being able to replenish it...not being able to find gas...I begged her once again to just come...

We hung up so that she could go talk to her family...I left the concession stand and talked to Tony, my husband and then to a teacher that has been living in her mother's house since her father passed away five years ago, leaving her house empty...

Within ten minutes, she had offered the use of her house for as long as needed...and Tony had found a job for Keith...I called Gator back and told her...I think she was unbelieving...because after she hung up...Keith called back to see if I was serious...I was dead serious...

By the time the game got started...word had spread around...and people were asking what they could do to help...

Gator and her family got here on Sunday...worn out...We talked til early that morning...the kids all played together...The teacher with the house came over and plans were made...

The next morning, Labor Day...we went to the house that Gator was going to be living in...and there were at least ten people there...moving things out...cleaning...A neighbor across the street fixed lunch for everyone...Her daughter had a birthday/slumber party the night before...but those girls weren't in bed...they were across the street getting Gator's house ready...

On Tuesday, the kids were enrolled in school...Now they are OWLS!!!...The teachers at the boys' school made sure they had new school supplies and backpacks...

By Wednesday, the house was ready to move into...beds had been found for everyone...Gator and her family moved into their new home...

I can't take credit for anything other than telling Gator that I love her and her family and that they were welcome to come into our home for as long as they needed to be there..

The credit goes to a small Tennessee community that has shown what true volunteerism is...what a true spirit of community is...it has once again come through and shown me how lucky I am to live in such a place...and now I'm even luckier because I have a dear friend just across the river from me...
