This was sent to ShadowM and he asked me to post it for D57:

They are putting Mom on a resperator as we speak. The weakness, the neurologist feels, is caused by Eaton-Lambert Syndrome. The nerves can not get the messages to the muscles because the chemical they transmit is being blocked by something else. Some docs and nurses out there may have heard of Myasthenia Gravis, which is kind of like this, only Eaton-Lambert is more closely related to cancer. Mom is getting so weak, she can hardly breathe on her own, thus the respirator. We do not have the diagnosis of lung cancer yet, as we need results from tests back, and it's taking time. She is real negative, and we had to talk her into doing the respirator. It's hard to convince her we need to see how bad the cancer is first, as if it's minor (small chance), it could be treated. But also, they need to try to treat the Eaton-Lambert before it does too much permanent damage to her nerve-muscle connection. They will be doing a plasma filtering later on, meaning they will run her blood through a machine to filter out the chemical they think is doing the damage. We are awaiting approval to use a medicine called 3 4 diamino puridine. It is an orphan drug FDA approves on a case-by-case basis. Eaton-Lambert is rare, as there are only hundreds of cases. The drug company the doctor is using to get it says they only have about 100 clients. I don't know what else to say. I really wish I could have sent this on to my other friends. Take care, sorry I am not there
