Subject: One Groove???? I Don't Think So!!!!
In reply to: tyson 's message, "track condition" on 22:51:12 06/16/06 Fri

Same conversation – different year!!

Ok, I haven’t been to the track much this year, but since I have raced at SSMC since 1995, I believe I have a pretty good idea of how things are. Usually the people that are upset about the track conditions are the ones that only know how to push the loud pedal down all the way – there is another pedal and it becomes REAL important in the feature races at SSMC.

First off, the track man is doing an excellent job of maintaining the premises – our facility looks professional every week – that takes A LOT OF WORK – THANK YOU, SONNY!!!!

Second, Sweet Springs will very seldom be ‘tacky’ all night! Never has, Never will and honestly, you don’t want it to be (unless you plan to start from the pole in the feature!). The clay is not that good (lots of sand) and has always been difficult to compact. If you dig deep into it (disc it) it will not hold together (then you would all be complaining about a rough track) without hours and hours of sheepsfooting. The track seldom goes dry slick with DUST – usually it just seals over and gets shiny slick, which is loads of FUN with a good setup and a driver with a soft right foot.

To say that our track is “one groove” is INSANE!!!! When the track slicks off it also gets wide and that is EXACTLY what is required for the guys to race from the back to the front. One groove -- how do you explain the photos I have been posting EVERY WEEK showing three and even four wide racing? If you make the track tacky all night, then you will end up with a win from the front row because everyone is fast and setup is not critical. Make your own groove – if you know everyone will be on the bottom and top, then figure out how to run the middle!!!

Also, it is difficult to maintain a tacky track for WINGED cars with WIDE tires – we just suck the moisture right out the track! The hard tire classes should be helping break the glaze off the track, but with the large Multi Class (soft tires, big wings) car count – this gets even more difficult.

My suggestion: work on your setup, learn throttle control and work on your braking skills. Prepare for July and August Missouri weather knowing that the track will seal over. Work on your tires – it is NOT illegal to grind, sand, dope etc… so if someone is softening their tires – GET OVER IT – and get busy.

There are guys getting it done from the back week-in, week-out. If the track is really that slick, then horsepower isn’t what is winning – it must be setup and driver skill – you better work to figure out what is beating you!
