Picture the scene, K/O cup semi-final, High Flying Eagles v Relegation battling Zeds. Last time the teams met 6 -2 to the Eagles. Eagles still chirping of the time they turned up with 5 players and won 5 - 3
Scoreline Eagles up 4-1, Zeds best two players already played and lost, only one possible outcome :- that's right 5-4 to the Zeds.
Now Capt Zed's masterplan can be revealed. Eagles have in Darren Collison, Dean Wisher, Andy Breen, Paul Coleburn and Jimmy Nichols probably 5 of the best 6 players from either team. But their other 4 are nowhere near the same quality. So the plan was simple enough, win 1 of the games against their top 5, and don't lose any of the other 4 against their minnows.
Although teams had to be put down separately, Capt Zed gambled that the Eagles would follow the same format that they have in their previous 3 home games, and so he matched his players accordingly. Sacrificing Scott Fuller against Darren Collison enabled him to match the rest in pairs that had the Zed player either being favourite or at least having a reasonable chance. Luckily the Eagles stuck to their predicted format so the plan had every chance of success. Unfrtunately Jimmy Carney, Steve Sanders and Alan Engledow all failed to topple their top 5 opponant, meaning that Steve Adams had to beat Jimmy Nichols to give our other (lesser) players the chance to beat their Eagle equivalents to win the match. Quincy came good and the rest is now Zed Folklore.
