I often do this myself. I recently purchased a G-Shock for myself, and the young woman at the store was quite friendly and we discussed watches at length while I was looking at the different models. It turns out she has quite an extensive watch collection but generally wears the same one to work since it's pretty well worn so she doesn't care if she bangs it on the counter or something.

About a week later I returned to the store to purchase a new Baby-G for my wife and found the same young woman working. By the time I picked one out, she had graciously tried on just about every model and color of Baby-G the store carries. At one point she was actually wearing three of them at once and joked that she should wear them the rest of the day (unfortunately she didn't actually do it).

I had a great time on both occasions, got two cool watches, and since then I regularly stop in just to see how she's doing and ask how the job search is going. Of course, I wish her good luck while secretly hoping that it takes a while for her to find another one. Hopefully she'll be around at least until I want another watch. :-)

I also find that asking a woman for the time and complimenting her watch is a great way to start a conversation. Many will simply show you the watch for a moment and sometimes offer a simple comment such as "it's a Baby-G," or "my boyfriend bought it for me," but now and again you find one that will tell you a lot about it and be receptive to further questioning and conversation.

Wearing a cool watch yourself sometimes leads to conversation as well. I recently had a cashier at a fast food place comment on my new G-Shock, and she more than willingly accepted when I offered to let her try it on. :-)

I guess I really need to quit buying watches for a while and invest in a digital camera instead.
