Re: Duskovic vs. Vachek Holdings

Thank you for your prompt reply. I apologise profusely for the omission. I will confer with my client as to the revised amount of the settlement offer, and inform you of same as soon as possible.

Yours sincerely
Michael Samuelle

Addendum: That’s a very impressive disclaimer. Would you mind if I plagiarised it?

Nikita stared at the last sentence with wide eyes, incredulous laughter bubbling up in her throat. Well, what do you know? The man has a sense of humour, after all.

Re: Duskovic vs. Vachek Holdings

Dear Mr. Samuelle,

I refer to your email of today’s day, and thank you in anticipation of your prompt attention to the matter of a revised figure.

However, as my law clerk worked long and hard on our firm’s official disclaimer, I am not in a position to allow you to plagiarise same. May I suggest you take a break from sending correspondence on the above file, and create a disclaimer of your own?

Yours sincerely
Nikita Wirth

Michael grinned, relieved. When he hadn’t received a reply right away, he’d begun to regret sending such a frivolously worded message. He’d acted on impulse, something he seemed to do frequently when it came to Nikita Wirth. He read her email again. Not only had she deliberately taken out her firm’s disclaimer, she’d written her reply in the same light-hearted manner as his original message. Still smiling, he reached for the keyboard.

Re: Duskovic vs. Vachek Holdings

Dear Ms. Wirth,

I refer to your email of even date. Thank you for your kind suggestion I take the time to create my own official disclaimer to accompany my outgoing emails. I will definitely keep it in mind.

Unfortunately, the possibility of ‘taking a break’ from preparing documentation on the abovementioned matter is not in the foreseeable future. Perhaps you would be able to assist me in this matter by advising your client to accept my client’s offer of settlement.

Yours sincerely
Michael Samuelle

He didn’t have to wait long for her reply. Five minutes later, the ‘new mail’ notification box flashed again.

Re: Duskovic vs. Vachek Holdings

As I have already stated in previous correspondence, I require a revised figure of said settlement offer before I can obtain my client’s instructions.

In addition, it appears you have once again neglected to have your client sign the agreement that is a condition of my client’s acceptance of said settlement offer. I’ve taken the liberty of enclosing said agreement, on the assumption you have misplaced the original copy. Please try to take more care of this one.

Yours sincerely,
Nikita Wirth

Michael smiled again, this time in admiration. She certainly gave as good as she got which was no surprise. Whether in person or via electronic means, having a discussion with Nikita Wirth was like having a blast of fresh, invigorating wind rush through his thoughts, sweeping away the fog of his everyday life.

In the back of his mind, he knew he was playing with fire. Every time he heard his laptop’s muted chime, announcing another message, his pulse quickened. The thought that Nikita Wirth was sitting across town, perhaps smiling as she read and replied to his email, was enough to make him lightheaded with anticipation.

Anticipation? Michael caught the thought, and frowned. Surely you can’t seriously be considering pursuing her, not now. Not yet.

The sudden trill of the telephone on his desk saved him from having to answer his own question. Still reading Nikita’ Wirth’s latest reply, he reached for the receiver, his greeting slightly distracted.

“Yes?”

“Hello, Michael.”

He leaned back in his chair as the voice on the other end of the line jerked him back to reality. “Andrea.”

“I hope I haven’t caught you at a bad time.”

“Not at all.”

“I’m just calling to see if we’re still going to the Vachek’s tomorrow night?”

Michael felt his jaw clench. He knew Andrea was merely following the profile that Madeline had set, but it still set his teeth on edge. He was uncomfortable being forced into this scenario, and Andrea was well aware of it.

But any silent listeners needed to be reassured. “Of course. I’m looking forward to seeing you.” He winced at the apparent affection in his voice, suddenly ashamed of the ease with which he was able to slip into the role of dutiful lover.

“What time shall I expect you?”

“The invitation was seven o’clock, for dinner at eight.” He closed his eyes. The prospect of spending the evening with Andrea, Elena Vachek and her father, not to mention several known terrorists, was less than appealing. Wanting to bring the conversation to a close, without appearing too hasty to do so, Michael decided to use the set profile to his advantage. As far as Salla Vachek was concerned, Andrea Karsoff was a consultant with a London recruitment firm, and usually worked every other Saturday.

Knowing full well that, in reality, Andrea would be spending tomorrow doing tactical research on the lower levels of Thames House, Michael smiled into the phone. “Are you working tomorrow?”

Michael could tell by the uncertainty in Andrea’s voice that his question had caught her off guard. “Uh, yes.”

“Then why don’t I pick you up from there?”

But Andrea was obviously in no mood to be dictated to. “Actually, no. I was wondering if you could pick me up from home.” Michael could hear the unspoken challenge simmering beneath her innocuous suggestion. “You do remember where I live, don’t you, Michael?”

Not for the first time he silently cursed the moment of weakness that had let him become involved, however briefly, with this woman. Even now, four years after he’d ended their short-lived sexual relationship, he could feel the cold anger that subtly laced her every word. Michael forced a smile to his lips, conscious of their silent audience. “Of course. I’ll pick you up at 6:45.”
