Chapter 69
Letonia still stood in the hall wondering how Cat found out about what her and John did and obviously it didn’t take a brain surgeon to work out that it was John who did the telling. She smiled to herself and knew that her plan was working, she was getting to John big time.
Des walked past her to see her smiling like a Cheshire cat
Des: What’s so funny?
Letonia shook her head to clear it
Letonia: N…nothing, just remembering one of those funny incidents I had in NYC
Des: Oh ok then, wanna go into class now?
Letonia: Yeah sure, by the way, where’s your twin kin?
Des: Who?
Letonia: Lami? Who else?
Des laughed
Des: Oh him, he’s speaking to the Principal about helping him fix his hard drive or something
Letonia: I don’t know why his cheap ass can’t get a brand new system; don’t that thing break down like almost every day?
Des: I know. Oh well lets go to class, he’ll find us there
They went to class and as they came in Cat cut Letonia one evil eye which freaked Letonia out that she went and sat as far away as possible from Cat and John. John just looked down and said nothing. Des sat down and soon Lami walked in looking distressed.
Des: Baby u okay?
Lami: I’ll tell you later.
Jackie was at home alone and playing with Symphony when the doorbell rang, she picked Symphony up and carried her to the door with her. She opened it to find Jamal standing there, she stood stunned
Jamal: Hi
Jackie (stuttering): H..hi
They stood there for a couple of seconds staring at each other until Jamal spoke
Jamal: I was supposed to come by today remember?
Jackie: Y..yeah I remember, come in.
She stood to the side and he walked in and she shut the door. They went quietly into the living room and Jackie put Symphony back on the floor
Jamal: So how have you been?
Jackie: I’ve been okay, u?
Jamal: Not really, I’ve kinda been struggling with life and all
Jackie: I hope it all works out for you
Jamal: Me too
Symphony started giggling and making faces and both Jamal and Jackie turned to look at her
Jamal: She is so adorable
Jackie: Wanna be properly introduced to her?
Jamal: Yes please
Jackie picked up a happy Symphony and looked at her
Jackie: Symphony Cyan, meet your daddy Jamal, Jamal meet your daughter Symphony Cyan
Symphony giggled and Jamal smiled
Jackie: Wanna hold her?
Jamal: Can I?
Jackie: Yeah u can, of course
Jackie handed Symphony to Jamal who held her for the first time, and he held her so close and Symphony kept gurgling and giggling, Jamal started blinking
Jackie looked at him
Jackie: Jamal are u crying?
Jamal (kept on blinking and he looked away):N…no, I got something in my eye that’s why.
Jackie smiled as it was clear he was emotional cos he started sniffing later.
Jackie: Do you want something to eat?
Jamal: Yeah
Jackie: I’ll go make us something to eat, you can stay here and play with your daughter
Jamal: thanks J
Jackie smiled, it had been a while since he called her ‘J’ and she really did miss it
She went to the kitchen leaving Jamal and Symphony together who were having a ball together
Class finished and Lami walked out with Des behind him
Des: Baby whassup?
Lami took her from everybody into a quiet area and asked her to sit down
Des: You’re scaring me, whassup?
Lami: You know I was looking at Principal’s computer, I accidentally came across student files and I came across Jamal’s files
Des: So?
Lami: Apparently he is to be expelled soon cos his grades are very bad and his attendance is bad as well. Teachers’ reports on him are not very good and if he doesn’t show up soon like in a month, he’ll be expelled with bad references if he does decide to go to college.
Des: Damn! We gotta tell him soon
Lami: I don’t know how to get him anymore and I doubt if John also does.
Des: Don’t worry I’ll find a way to get to him. Is that all that got u looking worried?
Lami: Yeah cos as much as I dislike him for screwing Jackie up, he’s still my boy at the end of the day
Des gave him a kiss
Des: You mean that was all worried you?
Lami: Yeah
Des kissed him again
Des: You are so caring, I love you much
Lami: I love you too
During lunch, Cat and John sat with the others and as they did, Letonia walked by batting her eyes at John while swinging her hips, John got hypnotised and Lami seeing this kicked John under the table. Letonia decided to stop and talk to Des
Letonia: Hi Dessie
Des: Lele, whassup?
Letonia: Nothing much,
She leaned over showing some cleavage to John’s advantage
Letonia: Dessie, I’ll be needing your help on the Trigonometry problem we were set in class
Des: Lele that’s ok
Letonia: Why don’t’ we all meet up and discuss it
Des was about to say ok until when Cat spoke up
Cat: No, you’re the only one having problems with it, we all get it but you and if anything if we meet up it’ll be without you
Letonia: Fine, suit yourself
Cat gave her another evil look
Letonia: I can see I’m not wanted here, I’ll call u later Des, bye Lami, bye John
As she was about to leave, Cat stuck her foot out and Letonia tripped over it, Cat gave Letonia another evil glare and Letonia hissed and walked away
John was about to say something when Cat held up her hand
Cat: Better shut up cos you got nothing to say.
She gave him a stare and John looked back down at his food and kept eating, Des and Lami looked at each other but said nothing
Cat: Why do u still talk to that bitch by the way? You know I don’t like her and u supposed to be my girl
Des: Firstly, I keep talking to her cos they say keep your friends close and your enemies closer, secondly she doesn’t bother me, and thirdly I gotta stay neutral and don’t want to be seen taking sides with anyone so I act like I know nothing so that if anything goes down no one says I took sides without knowing the full story.
Cat: I see your point but still
Des: U know I got your back regardless and I’mma always be there for you no matter what, I jus gotta be as neutral and as non involved as I can be. U know if it comes down to it, I’ll take u over her.
Cat: I know, thanks Des.
Des: Maybe we should go and see Jackie later
Lami: That’s not a bad idea actually
Cat: I think its about time we patched things up in this friendship, we’re too fragmented, like between us and Lib
Des shot her a look
Des: Don’t even go there
Cat: You gotta let it go at some point
Des: I know but…
Cat: But nothing, we have to sort things out cos we all growing up and we can’t let old stuff stop what could be a future where we all 90 and old and reminiscing about the past but we all stronger together
Des: What suddenly brings this on? You’re the same one who can’t stand Letonia
Cat: U forget one thing, she’s no friend of mine
Lami: Maybe we can do more talking when we get to Jackie’s and work things out
John: Including Lib?
Lami looked down and and balled his fists
Lami [grudgingly]: Yeah and that too.
Towards the evening, all 4 of them showed up and Jackie’s and Cat hit the doorbell
Jamal was still at Jackie’s and they had been talking and having a good time with Symphony and Jackie invited him to stay for dinner
Jamal: I’m not sure
Jackie: C’mon, look this is the first time we’re spending time together for a long time and Symphony has taken a serious liking to you and I don’t want her to be denied of her dad
Jamal: Only if I help you make dinner
Jackie: Sure, whaddaya want?
Jamal: Whatever you got
Jamal looked at her and smiled; Jackie smiled back at him and blushed. As much as she tried to deny it, she found herself liking him more and actually feeling the best she had done in a while.
The doorbell rang
Jamal: I’ll get it, you go on in the kitchen
He picked Symphony up who was so happy to be held by her daddy and she began to giggle and clap her hands. He started making baby noises towards her and pulling faces which made Symphony laughed all the more.
On the other side of the door
Des: Isn’t Jackie home?
Cat: Maybe she’s changing Symphony
The door opens and its Jamal holding a happy Symphony, the four of them stare at him in surprise………..
