Chapter 52
Lams: Sorry ma, I just felt I needed some air and I had to get some of that Frosty’s shake! Ever tried it? Its this close to being declared illegal by the FDA
Diane: You had us all worried!
Lams: You didn’t need to be, we left a message for y’all, and also, I got Des here with me, she’ll make sure nothing happens to me
Des: Hey just cos I took a bullet for you once don’t mean I wanna do it again!
Everyone laughed
Annette: You kids sometimes, I wonder what the world would be like without you
Diane: Probably peaceful
Des and Lami looked at each other
Des & Lami: Nah!
Des: It would be lonely
Lami: Very lonely
Des: Unhappy
Lami: Very unhappy
Des: Annoying
Lami: Very annoying
Des turned to him
Des: Dude can’t you say anything other than using ‘very’ for whatever I just said?
Lami: Very well I shall stop it now
Des rolled her eyes and the mothers laughed. Annette and Diane got up
Annette: We came home for a brief stop, but we’re going out again. Now, promise us, you won’t leave the house under any circumstance and you’ll call us if anything happens
Des: We promise
Diane: And you Lams?
Lams: I promise mother, sincerely I do
Diane: Uh-Uh
Annette: Aiight then we gone, take care y’all
Des and Lami seeing them to the door
Des: Alright now, y’all drive safely ya hear?
Lami: And don’t do anything we wouldn’t do
Annette and Diane could only shake their heads. Des and Lami closed the door
Des: Now you I wanna talk to now!
Lams: What’d I do?
Des: I wanna know what the hell just happened at Frostys?
Lams: What’d you mean?
Des: The whole Lib set us up and u almost beating his ass ish, who the hell told u?
Lams: Okay, but first can we sit down, I’m getting kinda tired.
They made their way back to the living room and sat down on the 3 seater couch facing each other
Des: Aiight then, who told you?
Lams: Remember when Shawn came over earlier today and you asked why he came?
Des: Yeah
Lams: And you know how despite females thinking Shawn is a dirty dog, he’s been one of my real friends and wouldn’t lie to me about such ish
Des: Yeah, Lams where are you going with all these? What the hell does Shawn have to do with this?
Lams: Well, he was the one who told me that word on the street and common knowledge is that Lib was the one who called them up and told them I was in town, they had no idea before he did. And being the fact that Lib has a score to settle with me over you
Des: So he intended to hurt me as well?
Lams: I’m not sure he initially set out to and the instructions would be to get me, you’d just be collateral damage
Des: So in that bastard’s attempts to get me to love him, he wants to kill you off? Oh I so am gonna get the fool!
Lams: That’s what I wanted to do today, but luckily I got taken away. But I decided one thing
Des: Which is?
Lams: We let him go
Des looks at him like he’s nuts
Des: What?
Lams: Look, I believe in God and in karma, that whatever you put out there will come back to you, and with all the bad karma he has created from himself, he’ll be getting it back in time, maybe not today or tomorrow, but whenever it will be, you can be sure it will be good and totally his just desserts
Des: True, but I still feel we should get him somehow
Lams comes closer
Lams: We are getting him
Des: I don’t understand you
Lams: By being together, we are getting him. His original plan was to separate us, and in doing so, he seems to have brought us closer to each other, and I want us to stay together and get even closer, closer to the point where I’d like to walk down that aisle with you
Des smiled
Des: You are so sweet you know that? We will stay together and we gon show him that no matter what, we ride or die for each other. But what about Krys?
Lams: She broke up with me remember? And all through the time I was in NY, she never called, wrote or anything, if not for you, I’d be lost. If she cared and loved me as much as she said she did, she would have cared, but she didn’t. I saw the way she looked at me at that night at Cash’s party, it was like ‘oh he’s back now, I’ll play the I missed you card, play with his mind and have my fun till he goes back to NYC, then nothing else changes’. But all the time Des, you stuck by me, through the moving experience, going away and my mom ish- not Jiz and Mal and definitely not Krys, it was you. And it is you that I want, you that I need, no other girl.
At that, Des’ eyes were brimming with tears and all she could do was pull Lams even closer and kiss him
Des: If you were anymore perfect I’d keep you in a glass case in my room
Lams: I like the in ur room idea, but scrap the glass case.
Later that day, Cat, Jiz, Mal, Jackie came over. They’d been at Des’ for 15 minutes and were all settling down
Cat: Y’all look a lot better
Jackie: Yeah Des, even with a bandage around your belly, you still look good, however, you needs to trim your hair
Des: I think the fear and panic I experienced had my hair shoot up, plus with all the drugs I been taking?
Jiz: You too Lams, you had us all scared for real
Lams: I was too, for a second there, I thought I was gonna die and won’t get to see y’all again
Des: Me too. Made me really appreciate you all. Thank you for being our friends
Cat: Awww its ok girl.
Jiz: So, Lams, what the hell happened today at Frostys?
Mal: Yeah cos I didn’t really understand you- why did u jump Lib like that?
Des and Lams look at each other
Lams: That so called friend of yours was the one who called CVG and told them I was back in town, and he knew they were gonna try and take me out. He knew where and when. He tried to kill/seriously hurt me, why cos I talked to Des
Everyone fell silent. Des and Lami waited, letting them take this in
Jiz [slowly]: Lams, are you sure about this?
Lams: Positive, Shawn told me
Jackie: Now that’s gotta be for real. Even though I think Shawn is a slime ball, he never lies to his friends
Cat: He did this? Oooh he is so screwed!
Des: Don’t get all iffy girl, we decided to leave him be.
Everyone looked at them incredulously
Jiz: What? You can’t let him get away with that, you wanted to beat his ass didn’t you?
Mal: Hell, I’ll beat him for you!
Lams: If we beat him up or something, we might be the ones getting in trouble with the cops and it’ll all be played out as some black on black violence and also if we go beat him up, we’ll be sinking to his level, using violence to deal with situations
Cat: So what do y’all wanna do?
Des: Leave him be and get on with our lives. Ultimately he failed cos instead of this separating us, it has done the complete opposite. Let him have that on his conscience every time he sees us
Cat: Wow, y’all really thought about this right?
Des: trust me when you’ve lost the amount of blood and have died twice like we have, you start to think clearer and appreciate life more.
Mal: Glad to have y’all back
Jackie: This is still so scary, I can’t believe that bony dude is capable of such wickedness. He will get his later I believe
Des: Yup. So J, how’s you and baby Deshone doing?
Jackie: Huh?
Des: You know your baby? I thought we agreed to name the child after me?
Mal: Nah huh no child of mine will be named Deshone
Des: What you tryna say now, the name ain’t good enough?
Mal: No, not really, just that no child of mine will be called Deshone that’s all. I don’t doubt the quality of the name, its just not a name for my child.
Des: Oh no he didn’t go there? What you wanna name her Bahamas? Or how about Malibu?
Mal: He, its gonna be a he and HE will not be named any of those girly names, something nice and strong, like Jamal Junior
Des rolled her eyes [remember they’re not arguing, they’re kidding]
Des: Wow, that has a lot of thought put into it! however we could name the child Turkey, after his daddy’s personality
Everyone oohed
Jiz: She dissed you man!
Mal: Lams check ur girl don’t make me wreck her!
Des: Any more than I am now? Man I’mma beat your ass flat to the ground
Mal: I’m 6”2 you can’t do anything
Des: And I’mma beat you till you’re 5”2
Cat: Oh watch out now, my girl be on steroids now, she can actually do it!
Des: Chica, they are not steroids, they’re simply medication to make the pain go away and make me heal faster
Cat: Uh Uh
Des: Don’t make me have to start on you!
Jiz: Listen to her baby, you don’t wanna get slapped till you’re 3”2!
Then Cat turned on Jiz and the playful arguments continued, it began to involve all of them more and more now.
Everyone was having a ball, except Talib and Krystina. Lets deal with Talib first.
He was in his room listening to music, trying to block out every thought of Des or Lami in his head. He’d already destroyed everything he had of them, if only he could do that to the memories but those damn things won’t go away. He remembered earlier today when Lami tried to beat him, he shook his head. The nerve of Lami tryna front like he didn’t have any part to play in this, if he’d kept himself in NYC and not bugged Des, everyone would be fine. And then Des, she was his dream girl come to life, but he can kiss that dream goodbye now. She’d never want to look at him anymore after this, after all he was the one who called the guys who shot her. Suddenly his phone rang, he picked it up
Lib: Hello?
It was Krystina
Krystina: Hi Lib its me Krys
Lib [sounding surprised]: Oh! How’d you get my number
Krys: I had it one day Des asked me to call you for her to tell you she’d be late for your date
Lib: Oh aiight then, so whassup?
Krys: Nothing much, u home alone?
Lib: Yeah, why?
Krys: Oh no reason, I just thought maybe we could hang out
Lib: Have you called Cat, Jackie, Cashmere or Tyra?
Krys: I tried Cat and Jackie but their phones were turned off, Cash is busy, and you know I still am not talking to Tyra
Lib: Ever since she turned gay?
Krys: Yup
Lib wanted to say something at that point but he didn’t feel in the mood to give any ethical speeches so he just left it there.
Krys: So do you wanna hang out or not?
Lib: I guess its cool, you can come over
Krys: Aiight then, I’ll be there in 20 minutes
Lib: You remember my house?
Krys: No doubt. See you in a sec!
Lib: Aiight then peace.
And they hung up. About half an hour later, she shows up at his doorstep and rings the bell, Lib goes to answer it
Lib: Hey…
