Sarquint holds Small Wonder tight as she recounts her children. He shares her pain, her regret. Inside, he thinks she did much better of a job than he did, but he doesn't speak his thoughts. Not now. Not so long afterwards. "I think," he says, "that we need to learn to let go of them, Small. They're not little pups anymore. We have to let them go, as hard as it is. It's part of parenting."

The last word makes him flinch. Parenting... what would he know of that? He exhales, bitter with himself. Until he hears what Small has to say about memories. That makes him smile. "Deal," he agrees. "I don't think you've ever had such a brilliant idea." He grins roguishly, "And you're so good at reminding me why you stole my heart away."
