Subject: CRMCH in the 'fifties Author: Mike Moody [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] Date Posted: 12:06:36 08/20/02 Tue Firstly, many thanks for such a full and fascinating website - I particularly enjoyed the virtual tour. I lived at Marsh Lane, Taplow in my early years and my dad was a patient at CRCMCH for several weeks during the very hot summer of (I think) 1958 or 1959. Sorry for the gory details but he'd undergone a haemmorhoid op : the hot weather inhibited the healing which is why he had to stay at Cliveden for so long! Having said that, (I was aged 5/6) I remember vividly visiting him there and was aware how kind and caring were the nurses and all other staff. In typical male fashion he and the other guys had a strong rapport with the female-nurses and sister who were so indulgent as to allow there charges on occassions to get dressed and go across to the Feathers for a pint! And we even collected my dad in the car once or twice of an evening and took him further afield to the Jolly Woodman, another local hostelry!! I also remember that during the heatwave, beds were sometimes wheeled right outside the wards into the open-air AND that some patients were actually left outside of a night to sleep (presumably voluntarily!!) NOW, in my later life I've done a fair amount of voluntary hospital visiting in Leamington Spa (alas the Warneford Hospital there has shared a similar fate to RCRCMH) and have always taken an interest in hospital management and miscellany. What I'd like to know, which hasn't been covered in the virtual tour is where were the OPERATING THEATRE(S) at Cliveden - presumably somewhere off the Long Corridor? I know surgery was carried out at hospital, witness my dad. Am I right in assuming (i.e. because of my dad's condition) that only mainly minor surgery was available after the war? ALSO, mention's been made of a former casualty-department : am I right in assuming this discontinued once Wexham Park opened or maybe sometime before? Notwithstanding the hospital's great fame as a centre for children's rheumatology-care, I assume that the larger acute hospitals in Slough, Windsor and Maidenhead were the main-thrust of local accident and emergency provision, with Cliveden providing a non-acute back-up? Once again, many thanks not just for the effort that's gone into this amazing website but the imaginative and more than colourful style of presentation! I'd be ever so grateful if anyone could answer the above queries for me and look forward to a reply or two. Thanks in anticipation, Mike Moody (Birmingham.)
