On a high
Asia's sexiest, Vicki Zhao, exudes not just sex but also a highly positive vibe to those around her....
Interview: Derek Yu (Taiwan)
Photography: Mitsuaki Kosizuka(Japan)

When the three babelicious Chinese actress popped into town together not too long ago, only one of them didn't get a single bit of bad press.
Despite the best efforts of eagle-eyed newspaper reporters, they were hard-pressed to find her letting slip with any sort of ridiculous superstar demands or throwing hissy fits. The name of that actress? Vicki Zhao Wei.

Little wonder then to find Vicki shooting straight up to number two on our 100 Sexiest women poll this year, making her Asia's sexiest women. Even more remarkably, this year marks Vicki's debut in the poll and she's already beaten veterans Shu Qi and Karen Mok, her co-stars in So Close and companions on that said visit.

But it's not just hormonally charged young men who can't get enough of the 26-year-old actress. She has long been a house-hold name since the period drama serial My Fair Princess kept TV viewers from Taiwan to Singapore glued to Vicki's portrayal of Little Swallow. From there, came singing and movie contracts and even offer from a slimming company to transform her into the micro-shorts-wearing babe she is today. But it's not just that pert body that has won Vicki her army of fans. It's her carefree, carpe diem attitude and FHM is bowled over by it when we spent a weekend with her in Tokyo...

Shaolin Soccer was a huge hit in Asia. Now it's taken Japan by storm...
Yes, over 200,000 people have seen it so far so. Just the other day, I was at a meet-the-fans session and there were all these Japanese boys in their 20s. Strangely, it was all very orderly, like a board meeting. To think, back home in China, lots of my fans are girls!

In the movie you play an ugly ducking. Why?
As an actress, I don't want to just rely on my looks to become popular. What endeared me to my fans was the character I played in Shaolin Soccer. But it's not the type of character that I'd like to play again. I didn't even think it required that much acting at all! (Writer-director-actor) Stephen Chow should take credit for it because it was his work and he was good at it. Even when the film took home the prizes at the Hongkong Film Awards, I didn't think I needed to be there to accept it alongside Stephen. He's the genius!

Speaking of Stephen, is he just as funny off-screen?
No, he's only funny in his movies. Off-screen, he speaks real slowly and monotonously like an old man.

Your work has brought you around Asia. How do you like it so far?
The funny thing about Asia is that initially the cities all look the same. But the more times you visit them, the more different they all start to look! For instance, whenever I'm in Hong Kong, I'm in the mood for red wine and senseless fun! And the place just gives you the feeling that you want to be alone. But in Taiwan, I feel like I want to be with somebody, no matter what it is that I want to do! And then in China, it's a place where I feel extremely free and comfortable with myself! I love the book shops and music stores in Singapore. There's not much to do here, it's mostly good, clean and safe entertainment.

Do you have a favourite?
I love the Taiwanese. They're all really cool. The Japanese are friendly, but you sense a bit of distance. I kind of blend in a bit more with the Taiwanese crowd.

What do you in Beijing?
I swim, play a game of tennis. It's the kind of good, clean Singapore-type-activities!

Do you ever get drunk?
Yeah, sure! But I don't drink so much anymore. Drinking sort of changes me into monster? I suddenly find the guts to do all the stuff never dared to do! Like if someone wants to leave, I'd insist no ones goes! Once in Singapore, I had a bit of drink after a filming session. Before that, a member of the crew had promised to bring me around to check out the club scene and because I was pretty high, I insisted on going, even though there's a law that put drunks behind bars! I was fearless for that moment!

But if you could change anything about yourself, what would it be?
I'd change nothing. Even if I was not Vicki Zhao Wei, I still wouldn't change a thing. I'm the sort who thinks that everything is fated. When I was young, I didn't know how to live life. I used to always think of worst-case scenarios when things were going smoothly. But I'm starting to enjoy living for the moment.

Has life been hard?
I think everyone will encounter some sort of bad things in their life. If there's none today, chances are there'll be a bigger one tomorrow! Nothing in this world is perfect. Bad things come from all sorts of things, everywhere. My family has seen me go through hell and back. Thankfully they've been very supportive when I was going through tough times; they just want to see me happy, that's all.

Are you happy with acting?
Ya, I really enjoy. It's very exciting. Life is like a stage. And art often imitates life!

What sort of guy would you date?
I don't need someone who has to keep trying to hold my interest with his antics...
What does he have to do?
He has to make me laugh and be a considerate and kind person.

Do you keep a diary?
I do, but I'm the sort who also quickly throws them away because I'm afraid someone might see them! Actually, I'd much rather write a book and get it published for the whole world to read! There's a lot about me that people don't know about yet...It's a little early for me to reveal anything, so let's just say there're lots of stories to be told!

So we're gonna see a tell-all autobiography soon?
No, not really. If the second half of my life turns out to be as exciting as it has been so far now, I might consider it. But if I'm going to lead an ordinary life, I'm not going to pen an autobiography just because I'm a celebrity, you know!

Your contract with those slimming professionals at Marie France Bodyline: what do they make you do?
Actually I'm supposed to have routine check-ups to gauge how much weight I've lost. They've also given me a sensible diet plan and the sort of food I should avoid but because of my busy work schedule...but they can't really tell what I'm doing behind their back. I may still look fleshy on certain parts of my body, but that's just a healthy glow!

Finally, do you think you're sexy?
Haha, what you you think?
